The only way I've seen high-quality tests (and thus high-quality production code we're justifiably confident in) "given" enough budget is to take it. Tests are just included in your estimates/points/what-have-you as a non-negotiable part of the "definition of done". Managers, bosses, stakeholders, clients — whoever wants to skip good tests? They're asking for buggy, unreliable code.

"Do you want a BROKEN feature by next Tuesday or would you like it WORKING a little bit later?"

(I'm a professional, so I don't usually SAY it like that. 😆)

I had a semi-lucid dream, which I never have! However, it was a ridiculous "waste" of a lucid dream: I knew I was dreaming, and that it was a weird dream, so I was repeating the details to myself in the dream itself *so I could tweet them*. 😅

I'm sorry, but I must share now: I dreamed that a mobster loved Seattle so much that he had a Lamborghini stolen (?) & modified so that running the command-line (??) with --init would do nothing unless you also added --ananana, which I figured out by puzzling through the source code.

I haven't had more than a handful of full nights' sleep in the past THREE MONTHS. Not even when I follow all the "sleep hygiene" advice from my doctor & others I've turned to.

This chronic sleep deprivation is fucking terrible and I'm at a loss at to what the hell I can do. 😔 Mostly I fall asleep normally but wake up at 3 or 4 AM, then cannot fall back asleep.

Sometimes I toss & turn until 5 or 6 AM.

Sometimes I just never fall asleep in the first place.

I never wake up feeling rested or refreshed anymore.

So I asked a bunch of runners here and at work for advice about my shin splints that started immediately with the #C25k program.

Keep in mind that I hadn't run since PE class back in high school. There were some commonalities to their advice:

1. your feet should land under your body, not in front of you

2. stand up straight as you run, don't lean forward so much

3. get real running shoes, not my Goodwill tennis shoes ;)

And the universal comment:

A Redditor on @askhistorians has a great answer about Hitler's oratory skills (he played to each audience, matching accent, register, references; he started calm but pulled audiences in emotionally)… reddit.com/r/AskHistorian… But the post really hits close to home these days in going over the background of Hitler's public positions and his support:

So I'm reading "IBM and the Holocaust" for the book club at work (I <3 that my *office* picked this book!).

It is so far from "old news" that it's scary. Capitalists who care only about profits, who are not at all deterred by the knowledge of the profound suffering, death, and outright murder that they are directly enabling…

So I'm now reading "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century" by Timothy Snyder. #OnTyranny goodreads.com/book/show/3391… "Aristotle warned that inequality brought instability, while Plato believed that demagogues exploited free speech to install themselves as tyrants." #OnTyranny p9

Things that help ME when I'm down:

- perspective:
- being real ("this does suck")
- imagining in 5 years (it'll probably be OK)
- helping someone else

- distractions:
- walk in nature (observing, not thinking)
- silliness & minor "adventures"
- books & movies If you think I'm having a hard time and you don't know what to do, try ^ those things on me.

As far as programming languages go, they actually are fairly similar. One major difference you'll encounter is Javascript's less-common "prototype inheritance", rather than "class inheritance": weeklywebwisdom.com/2017/09/13/cla… And if language diversity is something you're curious about, have I got a site for you!! It's a bajillion examples of different ways to print the lyrics to the song "99 Bottles of Beer".
