I have no writing advice but I gave up my car during this time and I DO have some advice on how to survive in LA as an artist type. Background - I’ve never had a safety net, never had money from parents, moved to LA with one months rent and have had years of low earnings.
The Joneses are not real. They do not care about if you can keep up with them. Working as a writer has nothing to do with making a shit ton Of money so just don’t make wealth your goal or your metric if you’re doing well.

It’s so insane that this has been largely ifnored but also not because guess who the brunt is falling on? WORKING MOTHERS. We are about to see a tidal wave of women in the workforce pushed out or to the side. It’s a disaster.
And guess who a huge section of working mothers are? Black and brown women who need school. They’ve had months and people have largely done SHIT about this. Why the hell didn’t we stay closed until school so that at least that would be safe? Where is @GavinNewsom?!!!!!!

A Father’s Day thought - when I was 16 my dad got sick, had to be hooked to dialysis many times a day and essentially was... quarantined. He became the stay at home parent to 5 kids. It wasn’t what he pictured his life but those years shaped our relationship...
I’ve always expected men to show up as partners, fold laundry, help with homework. Because that’s what my dad did during those years. I imagine this is what a lot of men are learning to do overnight during this time...

And there you have it - without funding and testing LAUSD cannot open. The second largest school district will leave kids at home and parents without childcare and an entire generation of kids falling behind in education. This is a race issue & ALL eyes should be on @GavinNewsom
If you think this would be happening if LAUSD were majority white, you are wrong. Our country doesn’t care if it’s black and brown and poor students don’t have access to equitable education. Hell, perhaps they prefer it? I’m done. We need the money for our schools NOW.

Summer of ‘99 I mailed in a headshot that said I was a dancer. It got in the wrong pile and when they called me someone thought I was from a dance company. Spent a month at Lincoln Center shoved in the background behind real dancers. First set I ever stepped foot on. Total magic.
Also hit two days of golden time, 16 hours on set ... on a SAG waiver. Opened that paycheck and it made no sense to me. Was making more than my parents for pretending to stretch and watch boys in tights.
