My partner and I both got COVID-19 a few days ago, our first time testing positive. Feeling very lucky that we have avoided it (at least, as far as we know) until now and that we were able to quickly access Paxlovid and other supplies, but... (1/8)
Photo of a rapid test from iHealth Labs on a white background. The test line on the test is very dark, clearly positive.

Feeling angry that we got sick despite wearing N95s everywhere, avoiding indoor dining, etc. I know so many people who have gotten sick during this wave, many without the resources that I have as someone with decent income and extensive knowledge about this virus. (2/8)

In December 2020, Congress gave the NIH $1.2 billion to study #LongCovid. Years later, not a single clinical trial has started and there's very little to show for that funding. @rachelcohrs and I dug into this for @statnews and @MuckRock: (1/11) statnews.com/2023/04/20/lon…

Screenshot of a STAT News article header Headline: The NIH has poured $1 billion into long Covid research — with little to show for it By Rachel Cohrs and Betsy Ladyzhets, April 20, 2023 Featured image is an illustration showing an empty pill bottle, labeled "Rx Long COVID treatment," with a "COMING SOON" sign filling it instead of pills. People in masks stand in front of the bottle, looking distressed.
WASHINGTON — The federal government has burned through more than $1 billion to study long Covid, an effort to help the millions of Americans who experience brain fog, fatigue, and other symptoms after recovering from a coronavirus infection. There’s basically nothing to show for it. The National Institutes of Health hasn’t signed up a single patient to test any potential treatments — despite a clear mandate from Congress to study them. And the few trials it is planning have already drawn a firestorm of criticism, especially one intervention that experts and advocates say may actually make...
The article goes into the NIH RECOVER initiative's biggest problems right now, focusing on its failure to start clinical trials that would deliver treatment to people with #LongCovid. Here are a few highlights: (2/11) muckrock.com/news/archives/…

Last year, delta overwhelmed hospitals in Idaho, causing 6,300 patient transfers in 4 months. @audreydutton and I looked at this period as a case study of the US’s decentralized healthcare system, for @19Documenting & @IdahoCapitalSun: (1/11)
idahocapitalsun.com/2022/03/16/ida… I analyzed data from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare on transfers throughout 2021, focusing on a 4-month period in which Idaho went into crisis standards of care to allow hospitals to conserve their limited resources. (2/11)
