Today we have the #ICPC Japanese domestic online contest #icpcjp. Because of the pandemic, 4 months later than its usual late june date. Tsukuba University is fielding 6 teams this year (three 1st year teams). You can follow the standings at icpcsec.firebaseapp.com/standings/
There was a small scare in the beginning because the teams could not access the server for about 2-3 minutes after the start time, but everything seems to be fine now.

Yesterday I was advising a student on writing a paper. I tell this advice to my students over and over again, so I thought I might as well make a thread about it:
tl;dr: "Your paper does not need a twist on the third act, so be upfront about what you want to say!"

People seem to like writing sequentially. Start with the premises, build on those, explain, and arrive on a conclusion.
For academic writing, I think this is bad. I recommend students to show the core idea ASAP (by the end of the 1st page), then explain how they got there.
