OK, I went through the journey of adding some meaningful backup power to my home in the most cost effective way I could find. Thought I would share my solution with anyone looking to do the same. Image TL/DR: I got a Westinghouse portable dual-fuel generator (gas & propane), 9500W continuous/12500W peak. 15 ft, 50amp cable. And a generator plug to my main panel w/an interlock. And a bunch of BBQ-sized propane tanks.

You can increase energy storage duration by overbuilding capacity. You don't necessarily need a new chemistry or fundamental storage mechanism. The biggest competitor to multi-day storage like @FormEnergyInc will be very cheap lithium-ion. And V2G. Remember how CPV was so much better than regular PV because it had much higher efficiency? Turns out just adding more cheap panels was the winning solution. I believe we are massively underestimating how cheap Li-Ion is going to get. So many incremental innovations in the works

1/ Thread on the coming internal combustion engine death spiral (which needs a better name). A hypothesis.. 2/ #energytwitter talks a lot about the utility death spiral. Still a theory - I think - as most utilities who haven't set their state on fire seem to still be doing pretty well. Shouldn't we expect the same kind of thing to happen in the internal combustion engine value chain?
