After intense discussions at pre-COP two things are clear:
1️⃣ Broad recognition on the need to achieve a course correct towards a resilient climate neutral 🌎 economy in line with 1.5 C. The GST decision at #COP28 is the natural space to agree key collective actions. 1/5

2️⃣ This means all countries have to dig deep, identify where they are willing to equitably step-up mitigation, adaptation & finance efforts in a COP28 decision. I was inspired by vast support for 3x RE, 2x energy efficiency & a just, step by step phase out of fossil fuels. 2/5

#COP26: On the assumption that the text (uploaded at 1810 GMT) will not change:

The text is meek, it’s weak and the 1.5C goal is only just alive, but a signal has been sent that the era of coal is ending. And that matters.

#COP26: While the deal recognises need for deep emissions cuts this decade, those commitments are punted to next year. Young people who’ve come of age in the climate crisis won’t tolerate many more outcomes like this. Why should they when they’re fighting for their futures?

#COP26: The key line about fossil fuels is still in the text.

It’s weak and compromised, but it’s a breakthrough, it’s a bridgehead and we have to fight like hell to keep it in there and have it strengthened.

#COP26: Today’s plenary could witness a defining moment with a clutch of countries seeking to strike that line from the deal and dilute plans to force nations to come back next year with better emissions plans.

#COP26: Today is an absolutely critical day in the fight to defend the 1.5C goal from vested interests who’ll do anything to dodge their responsibility for the climate crisis.

Anything less puts the essence of Paris in peril.

#COP26: The new final decision text could be better, it should be better, and we have one day left to make it a lot, lot better.

Right now the fingerprints of fossil fuel interests are still on the text and this is not the breakthrough deal that people hoped for in Glasgow.
