@leetweetsmedia Dare I say, a recognition of what the @ilo deems decent work.
It is high time that cultural labour scholars lock in to the bigger labour movement debates to square the circle. The CCIs are full of prototypical atypical workers. We have a lot to add to the global discussion. @leetweetsmedia @ilo And cultural labour scholars would be well served by locking into the same.

Hey @PrimeVideo this is an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE DECISION. This is one of the most interesting and creative shows I've seen lately. Genuinely excellent and I watch a lot of TV. Professionally. Tell em, Twitter, how much you love Three Pines. Sorry folks, but this is more evidence that making the "business case" for diversity is a total waste of time. The problem isn't ignorance. It's racism, sexism, homophobia (++++) in the c-suite.
The show was NUMBER ONE ffs. Don't get a better business case than that.

Today I sent a tweet about my workplace that went viral. Thanks to everyone who made that happen. So now that I have your attention, let's chat, shall we? Bear with me. I am a highly educated white woman with a permanent full time job in the academy. I have a GOOD JOB. My job never puts me in danger as a matter of course. I am paid to think, and teach, for a living. I take this very seriously, as do most of my colleagues. Ideas matter.

While diversity tax credits seem like a good policy move on the surface, evidence demonstrates that if they function as incentives to hire already marginalised equity-seeking groups, they will not fix The Problem. Why?/... Because further discounting the value of under-valued talent does ZIP ZERO to increase their industry capital. In fact, it reinscribes the idea that they are less worthy. #policyfail /....

Attention @wadekelly @drheatherj and all my other expat friends. Our country needs us. It’s time to heed the call of the moose. The antler signals are in the sky.

(S/o to @warrenstaples for this gem.) Let us never forget this brilliant moose moment by our American colony:

Well, folks, this is what the union I willingly pay dues to is proposing pre-emptively, before any financials are revealed, and with no return guarantee from the employers. Yes, really. National Jobs Protection Framework issuu.com/nteu/docs/nati… via @issuu Let’s be clear: the uni peak body is saying we’re looking at 25k jobs being but. And the union is proposing we hand over our wages, pensions, promotions and holidays to save HALF the jobs. Without any mandate from the members. They missed the memo on union democracy.

Today in a department meeting I fought hard against the “business as usual but online” line hard. Our students are experiencing profound disruption and dislocation, as are our sessional instructors. I hear you all. My job is to support you all. / Our students and sessionals are complex ppl whose lives extend well beyond their jobs. As full time academics our job is both to teach as best as we can in the current context, and shout for those whose inequality markers are worsened by this.

It is challenging to articulate the seething bile I hold in my belly for @JetstarAirways. Just held random at the gate for $65 because the BOOK AND CHOCOLATES I bought at departures put me over carryon weight limit..../ My ticket allowed 20kg checked baggage but now it’s too late they said. I can...wait for it...MISS THE FLIGHT!! or pay to being my stuff. Or throw out my belongings. Eat goat shit, @JetstarAirways. You’re the worst. And apologies to goats.../

It’s Sunday. Going to be 26 degrees, with a lovely breeze. Sun is shining.
And I’m working all. damn. day.
Going to be a long year, folks. This is NOT a valorisation of overwork in the academy. This is NOT a badge of honour. This is NOT a recommendation. This is crunch time. Do not do this if you can at all avoid it.../

It’s 6.15p and I’m working late to meet a writing deadline. And there is absolutely no food available on campus. Nothing. As if I wasn’t already irritated with my uni. Hope! A vending machine! Wait - what? It’s full of... uni merch? Branded wallets, earphones and stuffed koalas bears? #feedme

The topic tonight is “how do unions deal with the gig economy?”
Giant sigh.
One more time for the folks in the back:
THE ARTS AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES UNIONS CAN TELL YOU HOW.
Ffs. Ask @IATSE for starters. And @CdnActorsEquity @ACTRAnat @DGCTalent @NABET700_BA etc. Basic principles:
Follow the worker, not the workplace
Service the human, and their household, not the worker
Shape the labour market, not the employer
Think holistically. Make the union the community when the employer is ephemeral.

Fav costume, besides my kid: cereal killer. #witty Image Also had a kid looking gravely ill, holding a “no needles” sign. He was an anti vaxxer. I’m dead.

Stepped into the backyard and heard a humming from neighbours yard. Peeled over fence and see a massive, noisy swarm of...? circling in one spot. Creepy af. Anyone? Have now run around the house shutting windows, with scenes from Amityville Horror running through my head. Note: no apparent stench to accompany.

Panel starts with a content warning: discussions of gender-based harassment, misogyny and sexual violence may occur. Here we go. Image By the way: another absolutely packed room, and loads of men. All I can think is how rare it would be to see this at a film/tv industry event and/or academic event.
Comments welcome.

5 hours into #PAXAus2019. I have some thoughts, as a newbie to the gaming community.
1. Anyone who thinks the film & tv biz has a lot of money is not understanding the meaning of a lot of money.
2. The gaming community has a really good sense of humour about itself.../ 3. Definitely male dominated. But definitely not a hegemonic masculinity (I may recant this later. Panel on masculinity up next)
4. The people here are really NICE. Friendly, helpful, super engaged and engaging.

Gender parity in Canada’s film and television production industry | CRTC
(I’ll remain supportive but more voluntary action plans don’t make me terribly optimistic. Hope I’m wrong) crtc.gc.ca/eng/industr/pa… HOWEVER - the revised production reporting requirements are very interesting, requiring broadcasters to report on the # of women in key creative roles in the shows they produce and commission. Incl cinematographer, editor, 1st & 2nd lead perfs, + dir, writer, producer.
