Since Russia invaded Ukraine, out-of-context images and videos have circulated widely across social media platforms. Here are some of the claims my team at @USATODAY has debunked. 🧵 This image shows a May 2021 airstrike in the Gaza Strip, not a Russian attack in Ukraine usatoday.com/story/news/fac…

New fact check: A viral photo makes it look like President Biden checked his watch during a ceremony honoring U.S. service members killed in Kabul. But that's misleading. usatoday.com/story/news/fac… The way Biden honored the 11 caskets presented at Dover Air Force Base on Sunday was similar to how Trump paid respects to fallen service members during his presidency usatoday.com/story/news/fac…

In the past few days, screenshots of posts from fake Parler accounts for conservatives have taken off on social media. Here are just a few examples. A screenshot of a post from a fake Tucker Carlson account on Parler makes it look like the Fox News host is leaving to join NewsMax. He's not, but the screenshot is being passed around Facebook as if it were true. bit.ly/38NQkUh

NEW: Before Facebook and YouTube took it down, the "Plandemic" conspiracy video was viewed millions of times. I fact-checked seven of the most egregious falsehoods in the film. bit.ly/35EugYC Dr. Judy Mikovits said she was "held in jail with no charges."

This is inaccurate spin. She was charged in 2011 with stealing computer data and related property from her former employer. bit.ly/35EugYC

New from me: Republicans that criticize Trump or speak in favor of the impeachment inquiry are being targeted by disinformation on social media bit.ly/37wRHn8 Two days after Mitt Romney criticized Trump for urging China to investigate Joe Biden, right-wing social media users tried to implicate the senator in a sham corruption scheme. bit.ly/37wRHn8

I spoke with @GlennKesslerWP about how his small team tallied 10,000+ falsehoods from Donald Trump in less than three years poynter.org/fact-checking/… Each member of the @washingtonpost Fact Checker picks up two days a week to sift through Trump’s claims — including weekends. @GlennKesslerWP calculated that they've spent ~118 extra 8-hour workdays tallying falsehoods. poynter.org/fact-checking/…

I wrote about how some of the most viral misinformation on Facebook is unaltered, out-of-context news content poynter.org/fact-checking/… Nearly 20,000 people fell for this video caption hoax, which claimed Prabowo Subianto would win the Indonesian presidency. And it wasn’t even altered — the video came from Bloomberg. liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read…

New from me: A notorious fake news site has evaded Facebook's fact-checking system by using one simple trick: changing its domain. poynter.org/fact-checking/… YourNewsWire rebranded as News Punch in the fall specifically because Facebook's fact-checking partners were downranking its false stories in News Feed. @sarahfrier got the deets on that bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Think it's too early to think about 2020? Think again — misinformation is already targeting several presidential candidates poynter.org/fact-checking/… Just three days after @SenWarren announced her bid, @Storyful reported that Facebook and 4chan users were already planning how to smear her and stoke anger online storyful.com/blog/conservat…

New from me: InfoWars isn’t the only misinforming page that’s still allowed on Facebook. Fact-checkers have debunked this fake news site at least 80 times — and it’s still getting massive engagement poynter.org/news/fact-chec… In my analysis, I counted debunks about YourNewsWire + InfoWars from Facebook’s U.S. fact-checking partners over the past 19 months to see how effective they’ve been. I was still able to share several major hoaxes on Facebook without receiving a warning. Here’s why.
