SCOOP:

Vitalik has decided to spin out ecodev from EF

The decision was made fortnights ago when he tweeted something to that effect but was only announced internally a week ago.

The details of how it gets spun out are in flux

Thread 🧵 Image Originally the rumors from many sources were that the entire right side of the org chart would spin out

Most people took this to mean the blue box (eco dev) and the red box (ecosystem unblocking) Image

Ok, here's a thread with brief bios of each of the members of the Ethereum Foundation Silviculture Society, Vitalik's new inner circle

👇 Disclaimer: I put off this thread a couple days because it started to feel like work

Also because brief bio is complicated and it's basically inevitable that somebody gets annoyed at me for this

Transparency is not valued at EF these days

ETHEREUM ROADMAP EXPLAINER FOR THE REST OF US, part 6

The last and final part: The Splurge

Grandiose name but Vitalik's tldr is: "fix everything else" Image There is perhaps a bit of tension between the name "the Splurge" right after talking about the philosophical and technical need to keep the protocol simple.

But hey, some things are worth splurging on

The Purge

tldr: simplify the protocol, EIP4444/Portal Image OK, welcome back, I'm going to go bit by bit just like I did for part 4.

I read it again and didn't think it came out quite as well as the first 3 parts

And part 4 was a rewrite anyway, so we'll see how this one goes.

The VERGE

tldr: Vitalik wants to SNARK _everything_ so even "the verge" is a misnomer Unlike previous times where I wrote it all out and then tweeted them all, I am not going to do that this time

I'm just going to go one by one on the tweets. So maybe we'll get more errors, I don't know.

I don't want to lose hours of work again

ETHEREUM ROADMAP EXPLAINER FOR THE REST OF US, part 3

Welcome back, we will again attempt to dumb down Vitalik's blog post on "the Scourge" to the level that even an English major can understand it.

Vitalik was reaching for a rhyme with the Merge and the Surge, and scourge is what he came up with.

But the point is that Ethereum Proof of Stake is the first decentralized PoS and the one with by far the most economic activity and value on it.

It has a different set of problems than the "proof of stake" systems which came before it.Image So what are the scourges?

1. liquid staking (Lido) and restaking (Eigenlayer***)

2. MEV

*** Eigenlayer did the proper thing by capping how much of Lido's STETH that it accepted. Image

ETHEREUM ROADMAP EXPLAINER FOR THE REST OF US, part 2

Today's thread is on "The Surge", which means "scaling" in @VitalikButerin's whimsical rhyme scheme

Again this thread will attempt a high-level explainer so everyone can understand Ethereum's scaling roadmap. Image HISTORY

Vitalik begins with history

Ethereum's scaling ideas have always been _sharding_ and _layer2_.

Danksharding (another whimsical term coined by Vitalik in honor of @dankrad) or protodanksharding (in honor of Dankrad and @protolambda) is simply the idea of scaling onchain data for rollups.

But, if you step back, rollups are essentially shards (shard means a piece of a database)

So it's kinda the combo of sharding and layer2.

Small digression: I used to say a lot years ago that rollups are shards and got no traction. But when Vitalik says it in a blog post a few months ago, all the sudden everyone adopts it. 😡Image

ETHEREUM ROADMAP EXPLAINER FOR THE REST OF US, part 1

This thread will attempt to dumb down @VitalikButerin's series so that even the your average political science major like me can understand it

Let's discuss part 1, "The Merge" which happened on September 15, 2022

Why is a roadmap post talking about something from 2 years ago?

Because Ethereum was the first truly decentralized proof of stake chain.

It has magnitudes more stakers than any other chain.

In the past years we have learned things, and also we have seen the system in production, so we can make improvements.Image FIRST GOAL: Making it possible to stake with less than 32 Eth. Preferably 1 ETH

Every other Proof of Stake chain is essentially DPOS, which means that staking pools run the chain in data centers.

There's nothing exactly wrong with this, but it's not particularly decentralized especially against a sophisticated threat actor (eg, a rogue spy agency of a major country)

Ethereum has always prized decentralization on all axes, and having as many stakers distributed throughout the world only increases the robustness of the system

Maximum decentralization is necessary for ETH to be the internet's money and for Ethereum to be the trusted settlement layer for the entire world.

Out of the last 1000 $BTC blocks, 501 have been built by Antpool and FoundryUSA

Two pools control more than 50% of block production! 652 blocks built by Antpool, Foundry, f2pool

761 blocks built by top3 + viaBTC

Bitcoiner belief: OFAC sanctioned TornadoCash and now Ethereum is "censored"

Reality: every TornadoCash transaction gets confirmed faster than any Bitcoin block. (obviously this assumes gas fee set high enough and _any_ Bitcoin block is probably slight hyperbole but faster than 99.9% of Bitcoin blocks seems like a safe assumption)

At 20 billion dollars, the $ADA zombiechain 🧟⛓️ is a top 5 blockchain by market cap.

This is a graph of DeFi by chain

Do you see Cardano? It's a brown slice After all, years ago Charles confidently declared that "DeFi is easy" and that Ethereum's network effect doesn't exist

More than 2 years later from this tweet, Cardano is a total zombiechain 🧟⛓️ not even doing 1 transaction per second.
