Things to avoid saying during #AutismAcceptanceMonth, a thread:

“We’re all on the spectrum.”

I know you’re trying hard to relate, but no, we’re not. Autistic people each have unique experiences, challenges, and skills. “I never would’ve known if you didn’t tell me”

I have a lot of coping strategies including masking, and autistic people often do extra work to be accepted or make neurotypicals feel more comfortable.

Instead, consider how you can be more inclusive/be glad someone disclosed.

So since everyone’s talking about eugenics, here’s some fun legal history for everyone!

Buck v Bell (1927), where Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote “three generations of imbeciles are enough” - has never explicitly been overturned in the Supreme Court. Skinner v Oklahoma (1942) reached SCOTUS and overturned Oklahoma’s Habitual Sterilization Act of 1935. It didn’t particularly address disabled people but its reasoning was used to undermine the Buck v Bell decision.
