Meanwhile we just filed a letter at the state Supreme Judicial Court arguing that gang databases are inherently racist projects and courts should bar police from using them in determining reasonable suspicion...

Not all at Harvard believe in this racist dribble. You can read that letter here:

Very disappointed @theappeal is framing this question in this way and offering this platform to a prosecuting office that is currently asking the U.S. Supreme Court to increase the power of judges & prosecutors to cage children for very long periods of time. cc: @NikkitaOliver Instead of "HOW SHOULD JUDGES PUNISH YOUNG PEOPLE IN COURT?" might @theappeal center youth justice organizers and ask the questions framed by organizers elsewhere: "How do we end the incarceration of children?" We hope there is follow-up to that end.

There are now 145 pending amendments to this bill, yet the Senate is expected to vote tomorrow.

This is policy by ambush.

It allows no meaningful engagement by the public and fails to engage the people who are most harmed by policing: people living in poor communities of color. General questions to advance racial equity:

Does this build power & resources for neglected, policed & criminalized Black + brown communities?

Does this reduce contact between police & Black + brown people?

Does this reduce the resources & scope of the criminal legal system?

LONG THREAD: With today's announcement of substantial investment in data-driven pretrial criminal legal system reform, we are long-overdue for a broad conversation on addressing community needs, the role of philanthropy, & the ethics of certain models of social science research. We hope this will be a starting point, though it appears the train has already left the station:

Good quality research. Evidence-based. Data-driven.

These buzzwords are quite popular in #cjreform circles, among nonprofits, researchers, foundations, & elected officials.
