I am irrationally bothered by the weirdass rule the ESRB has seemingly put in place that doesn't allow the title logos from M-rated games to be displayed in Smash Directs. What does this even accomplish? ImageImageImageImage Get ready for the potential future:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x DANTE
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x DOOMGUY
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x 2B

All in fonts that aren't quite the actual typeface for the games they are from and off enough just to bother you.

Since it's Spooktober I feel sharing a spooky piece of music from video games for the next 31 days. I'll do two today since I missed yesterday. They won't all necessarily be from horror games, they could just give off a creepy vibe. 01
Cabin Theme from Friday the 13th

Probably the first "survival horror" game I ever played? This game actually instilled a childhood fear of Jason in me more than the movies because I was more familiar with the game. The cabin theme puts you on edge.

Oh shit. Lots of people thinking it will be Crash Bandicoot. But I'm done predicting who it's going to be because you can never really tell. Crash has a game coming out soon, sure, but none of the other DLC fighters lined up with an upcoming game.

Don't want to get my hopes up over this but, honestly, Travis deserves a spot in Smash. He's an icon of the Wii era, offering motion controls that actually benefited the game, and has (for the most part) remained a Nintendo exclusive character. Travis as earned a spot in Smash. Even his non-Nintendo ventures hardly count as Suda and Grasshopper were not involved with them. The NMH1 PS3/360 port in particular is considered pretty piss poor.

The Scott the Woz video on used games was so spot on I’ve got some used games with history to them as far as stickers go and reprinted cover art Image

I wish I could find the specific shot but it's one that's easy to miss. In the remake of Resident Evil when you enter Lisa's cabin, before you meet her, you hear her enter the cabin. Approaching a window in her room lets you catch a quick glimpse of her before she's out of frame. I can't even find a video of it, nobody approaches the window when they hear her enter the cabin.

HOLY SHIT WAKING UP TO ALL THIS MARIO NEWS A couple of things though: why on earth is Super Mario 3D All Stars going to be a limited time release? They're basically telling scalpers to buy the games in large quantities and resell them for absurd amounts and a "limited release" of something as big as this is stupid.

A while back (but still during this pandemic) I did a twitter trend where for 30 days I shared a favorite anime ED. Well, I thought I'd do that again for September but this time share 30 anime OPs! So... HERE WE GO! DAY 1
"Catch You, Catch Me" by Gumi
Cardcaptor Sakura

The essential classic. When I think of nostalgic late 90s/early 2000s anime, this is one of the OPs that immediately springs to mind. It fills me with such joy.

People dunk on the old English dub of Cardcaptors but, I gotta say, it was pretty cool of Pioneer and Nelvana to realize there was a market for the original Japanese version of the show and to release it on video for fans to purchase. That sort of thing just never happened in the late 90s or early 2000s when it came to those butchered dubs. If a show had a heavily edited dub that was basically what you were stuck with in the west. But with Cardcaptor Sakura they realized there was a market for it.

I feel like sharing this because it's how I feel about modern day Animal Crossing. I still enjoy Animal Crossing as it is today but I have to say, despite all the quality of life improvements, my favorite games in the series are still the older ones. Animal Crossing's really strayed away from what made me love it in the first place, the original almost feels like it's from another franchise entirely now. Ketsuya Eguchi created Animal Crossing based on the fish out of water feeling he had when he moved from his hometown.

I will always be thankful to G4 because they caused me to get Killer7 and in turn become a SUDA51 fan. I remember watching Cinematech at like 3am (the show that played obscure game trailers) and Killer7 showed up. It looked bonkers. The next day I went to GameStop and bought it. It was also only $10 because the game bombed and price dropped FAST. But since then I've been a fan of Suda's work. Killer7 is still my favorite game of his, probably because it was one they really let him bring his vision to life. NMH1 is a close second.

The worst part about the DP2 trans thing isn't Swery struggling to figure out what he did that hurt others, it's all the dudebros muddying up the comments telling him to ignore criticism/never apologize/the offended don't play his games/this is what happens etc. I doubt he'll take any of those comments seriously, he doesn't have the best grasp on the english language as it is, but it's getting all the comments calmly explaining the situation to him lost at sea. Though twitter is NOT the place for that discussion in the first place.

Maybe it's time I finally watch all of Cardcaptor Sakura from start to finish. See, growing up in the 90s and 2000s, to see the original Japanese Cardcaptors I could only watch what VHS copies I could get my hands on. Otherwise I had to settle with the terrible dub. But now I own all of CCS on blu-ray so I should finally put the time aside and watch the entire show. I owe it to my childhood anime crush, Sakura.

Watching some #maiddragon and one moment of animation I love from ep13, when Kanna informs Kobayashi that Tohru's dad has taken her back to their world and that she's likely not coming back. Kobayashi adjusting her glasses and anxiously scratching her head trying process it all. Like, it tells exactly how Kobayashi is feeling without saying anything. This surreal life she has grown accustomed to, having this gay as heck dragon maid in her life, was suddenly and swiftly taken away. Yasuhiro Takemoto boarded this episode.

People who only watched the anime of Watamote probably see little excerpts or fanart and think "what the heck she has friends now?" and the great thing is that it never felt forced, it all just came very naturally and just sort of... works. Yeah, you'd get whiplash if you jumped from where the anime ends right into volume 15 or whatever of the manga, but it was a real natural progression and that's something I love about it. Tomoko basically has a harem now but it happened in a very Tomoko way: by accident.

This is a good video that does a good job explaining that, despite all the improvements Animal Crossing has had over the years my favorite games in the series are still older ones. Before it became a beauty contest and made villagers little more than dolls New Leaf had these problems too, despite how much people romanticize that game now. I still like these games a lot but I liked feeling like a resident of the town more than the god of it.
