I am stoked that @ERC_Research is funding my research on Designing Social Media Recommendation
Algorithms for Societal Good (DeSiRe)!

With a team of researchers working with me @UniGraz we will try to figure out how to make social media better.

What are we going to do? 🧵

1/14 On, social media platforms (like this one), millions of posts are created daily. We need algorithms to sift through the mass and show us only the content that is "interesting" to us.

What is "interesting" is determined by the platforms, trying to maximise our engagement.

Whether or not universities should return to presence teaching is a pretty heated discussion in my academic bubble on Twitter right now. Given my past in modelling COVID spread in schools and nursing homes, I wanted to add my modelling perspective to the discussion. A 🧵

1/15 I wanted to model the three most common interventions to reduce COVID spread at universities:
(1) high vaccination rates among students and faculty
(2) masks
(3) reducing lecture hall occupancy

The question is: are these measures enough to prevent spread, given Omicron?
