Cash flow. Not a phrase you hear with freelance editors. Yet it’s vital to staying afloat and not having to take a staff job again. Here’s a quick breakdown 🧵
A layman’s definition of cash flow: a sufficient, regular flow of cash into your bank account.
Sufficient: you have enough to pay your bills
Regular: you know when the cash is coming
This lets you plan for the month, and project income for future months.

To edit effectively, you need the right information. But often it’s either not shared or assumed you already know it.
So how do you get what you need?
Here are 5 sets of questions every editor should ask 🧵
1. Ask about the Project Details
• What is the desired length?
• What hard drive will we use?
• What codec/resolution/frame rate is the footage?
• What is the delivery format?
• When is the hard due date?
• Who is watching the video?
• Where will they watch it?

Pricing video editing jobs is hard.
I’ve earned $14/hr and $500/hr.
Here’s everything I’ve learned 🧵
What matters most is how you think about money. If you think:
- I don't deserve that much
- It's hard to make money
- There's a limited supply
Instead think:
- I am worth it
- There is more than enough
- Money is a sign you helped someone

As a freelance video editor, one of the most helpful things I've done in the past year is define my process.
Most projects go through the same steps. Here are mine 👇 #postchat#FreelanceChat
Step 1: Conversation
• Chat about the project
• I take lots of notes and ask questions about their passion for the topic, big wins, etc
(I need to add: schedule the next follow-up call before hanging up)
