It took a bit of time, but here's the #thread🧵for our recent publication in @Nature about the first ancient #Genomes from Chichén Itzá, which has been, personally, one of the best team experiences in my academic life. The article can be found here: nature.com/articles/s4158…
Analysing 64 of the roughly 106 individuals buried at the chultún, we learned that all of them were male, which has never been reported before for a children burial in Mesoamerica. Some 25% of them were found to be related to each other, and we found two pairs of identical twins!

These African individuals were first noted by @MezaAbigail and colleagues to be not Native Americans and found in a hospital which was dedicated to care exclusively for the indigenous population of the Viceroyalty of the #NewSpain
