If you’re white, you know someone who empathizes with the mob at the Capitol.

You know someone who *supports* the actions taken by that mob.

1/
You know someone who thinks Trump won the election but it was “stolen” from him.

If you’re a white person in America, chances are good you know someone who thinks the way this person does.

Maybe you went to high school with them.

Maybe you’re related to them.

Maybe you’re married to them.

1/ Twitter sucks. Which is why I have never used it. And unfortshould be brought up upon anybody breaking the law I find itSeems to me like all the people who spent the last four year However you happen to know them, they’re in your life. Whether by choice or by chance, these are your people.

In the J-term class I'm teaching, the topic of "faking it" came up yesterday. I don't know who needs to hear this today but I thought it was worth sharing.

1/
Some women and non-binary people with vaginas feel pressured to "perform" pleasure for the benefit of a partner. In movies and on TV, sex rarely takes a long time -- it's done quickly and both parties act as though they had an orgasm through penis-in-vagina sex.

I've worked as a volunteer at the past three inaugurations: twice with the American Red Cross (Obama 2009, Trump 2017) and once with the Boy Scouts of America (Obama 2013).

1/
I was proud to serve at all three events. Crowds in 2009 and 2013 were massive but I felt safe. Crowds were tiny in 2017 and there was more discord but I still felt safe.

Like the author of the piece, I've been on the "patient side of the stethoscope" before -- through hospitalizations with Greyson, my (compulsively early but) late wife, and myself.

1/ I empathize with how frightening it can be when a loved one is in the hospital. I also empathize with how difficult it can be to be a healthcare professional taking care of someone - someone who is usually cared for by a loved one who, at that moment, feels helpless.

Thank you to my @UVA, @UVASON, and @uvamedicine colleagues who have been speaking out loudly, clearly, and consistently on Twitter over the past year (and long before that) about the ways in which politics, policy, racism, and health are inextricably intertwined.

1/
For my colleagues at UVA who *haven't* dipped their toe into using Twitter to speak truth to power, here are a few tips for getting started.

1. Decide what kind of world you want to live in.

I have a tip for those of you who, like me, are inundated by emails from organizations wanting to “pick your brain” about diversity and inclusion work.

1/
Until we collectively recognize that our diversity and inclusion expertise is a skill with real value, people with privilege will keep expecting us to give away our expertise for free.

After completing a comprehensive analysis of four years of tweets from 44 of the top 50 schools of nursing, I have some advice for schools of nursing:

1/
Use hashtags that other people are using, too.

~90% of the hashtags used by 44 schools of nursing between 9/2018 and 12/2020 were used ten or fewer times across 57,306 tweets.

Around ~50% were used only ONCE.

Any R wizards out there? I’m stuck on what *should* be a easy step: writing the code to export the console output to an Excel file.

Here’s a pic of the code I’ve written so far

For the second time this week, a nurse has asked me whether the term LGBTQ+ should be replaced by the phrase “sexual and gender minorities” in nursing texts.

1/
In both instances, it was a heterosexual, cisgender nurse leader asking me.

👇🏻A thread about #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

I never thought much about breast cancer when I was younger.

My mom died of ovarian cancer when she was 52.

My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer but she was old and had Alzheimer’s. I wasn’t worried.

1/
But then in 2010, my first cousin once removed - also a college professor, coincidentally - died of metastatic breast cancer. Melanie was 44 years old. I was 38 at the time.

Kudos to @EmersonCollege (and their #COVID19 lead @emuurisepp) for doing a stellar job!

A key component of their success: *mandatory* weekly testing of all students taking classes on campus, with results reported directly to the College.

I’d love to see @UVA do this! Emerson has done more that 20K tests and has had only 18 positives. In a large, densely-populated city. With high-rise dorms. emerson.edu/one-emerson/da…

If @UVA tested every student taking classes on Grounds, every week, I suspect risk behaviors would decrease.

If you’re planning to vote for Trump because you like his position on [guns, taxes, abortion, whatever], please understand that your vote will indicate you also like his position on white supremacy.

A white supremacist you like better than Biden is still a white supremacist. Imagine supporting a convicted pedophile for your local school board because you like their vision for education reform.

Have you ever wondered how diverse an authorship team could be if there were NO gatekeeper and all were welcome to participate?

1/
We're still waiting to confirm 4 co-authors but, of the ones we've confirmed so far:

21% identify as a person of color and/or under-represented minority

26% identify as a person with a disability

36% identify as LGBTQ+

👇🏻 Radical proposal...

What if promotion & tenure committees nationwide agreed to exclude ALL accomplishments from March to December 2019 when reviewing dossiers/packets?

1/
Instead, candidates‘ would submit a one-page statement about what they did during Mar-Dec 2019 to take care of themselves, their families, and their communities during the pandemic.

Greyson’s latest vocal tic is “eat that booty like groceries.” And when I say “tic,” I mean an actual tic - he has Tourette’s and coprolalia.

It's Day 10 of our collaborative endeavor to develop guidelines for institutions to use in documenting social media scholarship in dossiers and CVs.

45 co-authors, 0 phone calls, 0 zoom mtgs, and about 8 gazillion edits.

Thanks to the heroic revision efforts of the world's best co-author @jmugele, I just shared the semi-final draft with everyone for review, minor edits, and formatting.

Tip for faculty members looking for a different way to assess content mastery than yet another essay or test:

Ask students to develop a "teaching tool" to teach the content to someone else. The tool should be detailed, accurate, and engaging -- otherwise, there are no rules.

1 In order to teach someone something, you need to understand it well yourself. When a student develops a teaching tool, they demonstrate their understanding of the content.

I'm deeply disappointed by the quality of the "educational resources on the NursesVote.org website." In order to view ANY info about candidates, you have to provide your contact info. Click on "Terms of Use" to see if your info will be sold and there ARE no terms of use Seriously. Click on "Terms of Use" here: p2a.co/iZC4h5e/candid…

It unhelpfully redirects back to the same webpage.

👇Publication opportunity for MD, NP, and RN tweeps!

I'm writing a piece on how to document social media engagement as public scholarship on CVs and dossiers in medicine and nursing. Target Journal = @AcadMedJournal

There's no widely-accepted format for how to do this so I thought it was about time we fixed that. :)
