On those Korean American church scenes in “Beef”: For some who've lived a similar reality, it delicately captures the sense of belonging, social pressures & uncomfortable dynamics inextricably linked to the KA church.

As Asian Ams attempt to make sense of 2 deadly shootings, experts warn against drawing broad cultural conclusions from the gun violence. The violence, rather, is symptomatic of a “uniquely American phenomenon,” said @DrJenHo.
nbcnews.com/news/us-news/r… “The problem is, when an Asian American or Asian person does something in the United States, it feels like the whole weight of a community ... gets placed on the bodies of people.”

“Asian Americans aren’t exempt from mass killings,”

Last night I was scrolling tiktok when I came across a post about kpop the musical and all the info in it sounded so fuqn familiar. That’s bc the quotes, the info, even the stats this person cited were identical to what was in my piece. 🤨 I’m so happy this info is being read and shared. Ppl need to learn about the AAPI community. but it is disappointing when tiktokers rip from journos— who spent time on hours of research and interviews, oftentimes working far past work hours to get the story right — w/NO CITATION.

A significant finding in this report involves Operation Keiki Shield, a law enforcement operation to address child sex trafficking in the state. 38% arrested through the operation & accused of soliciting sex online from a 13yo were military personnel
nbcnews.com/news/us-news/n… “What that also indicates to me is that the predation that involves soldiers preying on children appears to be widespread,” said @KharaJabola co-chair of the Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Women and Girls Task Force, which released the report.

Exit polls show that Asian Americans favored Dem during the midterms. @sarasadhwani senior researcher at @AAPIData, told NBC News the results are consistent w/years past, proving Asian Americans have emerged as a Democratic bloc with “growing reliability.”
nbcnews.com/news/asian-ame… But that trend is not static, she said.

“Nationally, Asian Americans are in play in some of the most competitive battleground states and swing districts.”
“While many communities of color are trending towards the Democratic Party, they cannot be taken for granted.”

this past weekend i had an extremely traumatic experience in central park. someone on an ebike saw me on my walk, parked themselves in a corner ahead and waited. i had seen this person ride past and look back at me several times. I found it odd but when they turned the corner... i assumed they had sped off like the many other bikers on that trail.
welp not so. they waited until i too had turned the corner and then proceeded to follow me. he attempted to back me into the north woods. I screamed over and over at them to get the FUQ away from me...

I wrote about a white woman named Karen, who dubbed herself the "Queen of Congee" and created a company that claimed to "improve" the beloved rice porridge for the "Western palate."
nbcnews.com/news/asian-ame… The company issued a statement after AAPI took issue w/several aspects of the company, including how the staff did not appear to include employees of Asian descent & how Taylor had written a now-edited post titled, “How I discovered the miracle of congee and improved it.”

This is my latest, on how white parents might 'other' their multiracial children, and why being a parent to a child of color does not mean you can identify with the experiences of POC: As @phdhingra1 pointed out, Just as men who have daughters can still be sexist and are not immediately in touch with women’s issues due to their parenthood, those with multiracial children can similarly lack knowledge about the experiences and burdens that people of color carry.

My latest. ATL shooting suspect told investigators he had a "sex addiction," claiming no racial motivations. However experts say white men have traditionally been given a pass when they say it -- and have the privilege of overlooking how race is a factor.
nbcnews.com/news/asian-ame… “Historically, the term ‘sex addiction’ has been used by white males to absolve themselves from personal and legal responsibility for their behaviors,” Apryl Alexander, associate professor in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver, told me.

My latest: A new @StopAAPIHate report revealed nearly 3,800 incidents reported over the course of ~1yr during the pandemic. Women made up a far higher share of the reports at 68 percent, compared to men, who made up 29 percent of respondents.

nbcnews.com/news/asian-ame… Russell Jeung, professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University and the forum’s founder, said that the coalescence of racism and sexism, including the stereotype that Asian women are meek and subservient, likely factors into this disparity.

we need to be way more understanding of our immigrant parents. esp those who weren't afforded the luxury of educations. I see a lot of people lash out at their parents for saying things that can be insensitive. 1/4 yes, i absolutely think we need to educate our moms and dads about social justice issues, etc. but i'm not gonna chew them out if they don't understand the phrase "toxic masculinity." there's a level of wokeness that comes with privilege. 2/4

This is Qiu Jin. #wcw She was a Chinese feminist revolutionary and poet during a time when it was risky for women to be outspoken. Though she was forced to marry a dude against her own wishes, she eventually ditched his ass in 1903 to study in Japan. Some accounts say 1904. 1/5 It was then she became a vocal supporter of women's rights. 2 years later, she returned to China w/a mission to topple the Qing government. Happy Valentine's Day! This is a thread about true love.
When I was little, I did not give a shit about Li Shang even tho everyone else thought he was hot.
I did, however, have a thing for Shan Yu -- the dude you're supposed to hate. Honestly, today he would've been a hero. Shan Yu knew that building a wall to "protect" a country was bullshit. He scales the mfing Great Wall. Prances into the Forbidden City with his falcon Hayabusa. Does a way way way way cooler trojan horse. @ Trump

I sat down with @ronnychieng just ahead of the Asian August madness he is hands-down one of the most interesting people I've ever talked to. Some highlights:
huffingtonpost.com/entry/daily-sh… On that shitty Jesse Watters Chinatown segment:
“As soon as I got out of the car, people lined up around the block [to talk to us]. People in Chinatown are politically active and they were angry about what happened. I basically gave people a platform to talk about it.”

You’re 8 years old.
Your 3rd grade class orders chinese food & your father delivers it. You are so excited to see your pops in school. He’s your hero. But apparently other kids don’t think he’s so cool. They laugh at him and mimic his accent. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore. You’re 9 years old.
You attend ballet camp. Someone tells you that another girl *hates* you. She thinks your eyes are an “ugly shape.” You don’t have the vocabulary to describe why that’s hurtful. But now, you hate your distinctly Asian face. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore.
