Virtually every day of my working life, I have conversations about prioritization, and I'm struck over and over about how complicated people find it, and how it should be so much simpler than it is. It's down to granularity.

- Time-consuming & expensive (often requiring a bunch of senior people)
- Highly subjective & easy to game
- Obsolete as soon as it's done, requiring regular rework
- Focused on solutions

When someone asks for a delivery date on that upcoming killer feature, they're not asking what they really need.

They're trying to understand whether they'll be able to meet their own goals. They're looking for a comfort blanket.

Rather than giving a vague reassurance about the date (or giving them the bad news that it's running late), ask why they need to know (after all, asking "why" is what PMs do best!)
