NEW - Queensland has sadly recorded another 9 COVID deaths and 16,812 new cases overnight, including 5572 RATs. Deputy Premier Steven Miles confirms there are currently 1875 still in hotel quarantine. That figure is expected to drop on Saturday when the international borders reopen and restrictions are removed.

NEW - Queensland has sadly recorded 11 COVID-19 deaths overnight. There were 19,932 infections including 5940 RATs. The Sunshine State has also reached the 1 million booster jabs milestone as of today.

NEW - Queensland has sadly seen 16 COVID-19 deaths overnight, which is the deadliest day the state has recorded since the beginning of the pandemic. Health Minister Yvette D'Ath also says 15,962 new infections were identified overnight, from 32,506 tests, including 5994 RATs. There are 819 people in hospitals with COVID-19, 50 in ICU and of those 18 are ventilated.

NEW - Queensland has recorded 2 new cases of COVID-19, both are in hotel quarantine. Health Minister Yvette D'Ath has given an update on the man from Nigeria in hotel quarantine in Cairns (who sparked the exposure site earlier this week). He has the Omicron COVID-19 variant & everyone on the flight he took to arrive has been deemed a close contact.

#BREAKING: Queensland records 20 new COVID-19 cases. 19 of them are overseas acquired - a bulk carrier vessel crew. The other local case is a WA traveller who arrived from the Philippines and left quarantine on July 17 | @NewsTalk4BC @NewsTalk4BC The WA traveller became unwell and was tested on July 26 - meaning his infectious period dates back to July 22. The person had been staying at a backpackers hostel on Roma Street in Brisbane.

No new local cases of COVID-19 in Queensland. CHO Dr Jeanette Young says the case from yesterday (man who returned to QLD from China) has the same genomic sequence with a traveller who returned from South Africa via Doha. There are 7 people in that cluster | @NewsTalk4BC Dr Young says she believes his infection is unlikely to have spread to anyone locally in Queensland, considering serology testing suggests the strain came from overseas & he had been in quarantine.

#BREAKING: Queensland records three new cases of COVID-19, including the partner of the Grand Chancellor Hotel cleaner and also a father and daughter in hotel quarantine. It was confirmed last night the cleaner's partner has been isolating since January 7. @9NewsQueensland CHO Dr Jeanette Young confirms the hotel cleaner's partner became unwell on the evening of January 7. He tested negative that morning before developing "extremely mild symptoms". The two days before then present a risk for others.
