👋🏻 @Grok_Ventures has acquired more than an 11% interest in @AGL - becoming the largest shareholder.

We will be voting against the upcoming, flawed demerger.

Why?

💡 When a worker lit Sydney’s first gas lamp in 1841, @AGL was a company excited to embrace the future – not one that was afraid of it.

For 180 years, the company has had a proud history of leaning into the future, innovation & embracing the latest in technology.

🧵 Budget next month! Big chance to double down on our biggest economic opportunity… decarbonisation.

It isn’t an “environment portfolio” issue. It is an all of economy issue 🇳🇿🌏

@joshfrydenberg, if decarbonisation wasn’t just a mention, it could look something like this 👇🏻 1. HOUSING & HEALTH - Help Aussies electrify their homes 🏡 & 🏥

Switching your car & appliances (heating/water/cooking etc) from petrol & gas to electricity drops energy bills & makes your house far healthier. Panels & batteries further reduce costs. @RewiringAus can help. 2/13

Yesterday, my wife Annie & I announced our "green pledge".

Our goal: invest + donate >$1.5b by 2030
... towards keeping warming <1.5° by 2030 🌏

Ahead of #COP26 in Glasgow - we're raising our personal ambition & urgency.

Explainer thread: 🧵👇🏻

afr.com/policy/energy-… Why now? #COP26 brings together governments, countries, businesses & individuals to tackle the largest existential crisis facing humanity - ensuring a habitable climate for our future.

None of those groups can solve it alone.

All of those groups must raise their ambition.

Because @JasonFalinskiMP made me spelunk his tweets to find potshots... let's debunk this one.

How did the UK achieve this "fantastic outcome"? What can we "learn from them"?

"The answer is simple, they used natural gas and nuclear energy."

Is it true? Let's look... 🇬🇧 vs 🇦🇺 So let's start by looking at @JasonFalinskiMP's "simple answer" - gas and nuclear are what we could learn from the UK to improve our emissions?

Gas? Nope.
🇬🇧 - flat 2005-2018
🇦🇺 - doubled (10% to 20%)

I'll get to today's announcements later.

Apologies - been smashed busy, but here are some thoughts + understandings on Tuesday's announcements on energy + gas.

What have we learned? Here's my thinking. I'd love feedback to learn 🙏🏻

A long thread! 👇🏻 There were 3 announcements (my summary):

1. TRANSMISSION - New grid infrastructure for renewables
($250m funding + 5,000 jobs - 3-5 years)

2. GENERATION - New gas plant in the Hunter (3-4 years)

3. EXTRACTION - New gas pipeline network, hub + 5 new gas basins (10-30 years)

Serious question @ScottMorrisonMP.

Are you serious about 1GW of dispatchable generation in Newcastle (quote by April 2021, live by December 2023)... or you're mandating building a gas plant?

If we can do the former _without_ gas, will you say no?

Define "dispatchable"? I'll assume whatever the amount of subsidy or government investment $ approved for this would be the same no matter the technology chosen?

Dear @ScottMorrisonMP 😡

F'king hell mate. Macca's again? Smart drive throughs? I think you're missing the point. By a mile.

If you were in the room yesterday, maybe you’d understand the anger of the world. But you didn’t show up?

THREAD (rant?) 👇🏻

smh.com.au/world/north-am… Physics doesn’t play politics. "Nature doesn’t negotiate" as Guterres said.

Tomorrow you have a chance. Ocean plastic & recycling are important. Twiggy's doing awesome stuff. But can you feel the fear on climate & emissions?! We're fiddling while the world literally burns!

Oh @AngusTaylorMP 🤦🏼‍♂️

A thread (of gold)!⚡️#auspoI

Here’s you - 6 months ago, as our Energy Minister! - launching an off grid, solar powered, battery powered school. Yup. You!

dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/…

If the video doesn’t jog your memory, here’s your own quote from it... “Put simply, this is a classroom that has solar cells on its roof. It’s got a battery and that means it doesn’t have to connect up to the grid.
The reason this is so important is it delivers very significant savings.”

Couldn’t agree more, and apparently...

The most important thing about solar + wind that everyone has to understand is the learning rate. Here’s a good example. These are both technology + scale driven (like chips or phone cameras). Their input costs are $0, so all manufacturing improvements directly drive down $... This makes them radically different in their cost structure to fossil fuel based energy sources (that require trucks / trains / ships / fuel / people to run a plant).

They _will_ continue to get cheaper. It’s a certainty. For many years (more likely many decades) to come.

⚡️Taking Australia 100% onto renewables eventually? Been asked a few times - so I’ve tried to write up some logic off top of my head, I hope others can bring the maths & fact check my thinking paths. apologies for typos - it’s late. We can do this 🇦🇺. More… (1/8) Most important issue to grok? Time shifting. We need to shift the time energy is captured to when it is used. Multiple techniques like batteries and time zones (continent wide grid). (2/8)
