I do not understand why we cannot set up a best-practice digitisation scheme for any such “priceless” out-of-copyright material passing thru private collections via auction houses. Their sale could help pay the costs. google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theg…
Actually, in our new book, we publish a portrait for the first time that was sold to a private collection in the 1970s: only known now via a film negative stored at a national gallery, taken as it passed thru the auction house. We can photograph out of copyright material freely!

Hi! I’m the Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage at @edinburghuni, & today I’ll be talking about the digitisation of Gallery, Library, Archive & Museum (GLAM) material in the context of #Covid19, & how that intersects with #digitalhumanities research interests #DHgoesVIRAL 1/20
First, I want to acknowledge how stressful a time this is for all of us. Also the work that went into the sudden shut down of our memory institutions. More than ever, we are all dependent on digital, & the digitisation of all of society #DHgoesVIRAL 2/20
