First thing I do when we start a new game is research our players.

Who are they? What motivates them? Understand not just their needs, but their desires. Why do they play?

The answers to these questions are as important as the game design pillars. Anyway, Cait is good, go sign up to her newsletter.

Talking to different studios, I've realised some don't do structured ideation sessions.

This can cause unproductive disagreements in a team and is less effective at finding ideas.

Let me explain what structured ideation sessions are and how to run them. 🧡 Structured ideation is better than brainstorming because:

πŸ’¬ Everyone's voices are heard
🎯 The team is focused and aligned on hitting project goals
❀️ Greater psychological safety
🌱 Disagreements are enriching, not destructive
πŸ“„ Clear documentation throughout and next steps

Every extrinsic motivation system in a game reaches what I've started calling the point of nihilism. You're logging in every day, making the number go up. Then you wake up one day and think "what's the point" so you just stop playing.

That's the point where intrinsic motivations need to step in.

This is a really good question that I get a lot.

So here is a thread of exercises to build your skills as a game designer!

Game designers, feel free to add your own. 😊 πŸ’ Exercise 1 πŸ’

Grab friends and a boardgame, set yourself a goal (eg make it co-operative), incrementally tweak rules, playtest, note how they changed the experience and why.

You don't need to know how to code to be a game designer.

πŸ’–πŸŽΆπŸ“šπŸŒΌπŸ’…πŸ’žβœ¨πŸƒπŸ’— Of course if you want to learn to code, that's great and all the power to you.

But it's not a necessity for your job.

I've had to close my DMs.

As much as I wish I could help everyone seeking industry advice, truth is I can barely keep up. πŸ’¦

I'll continue to share my game industry knowledge through Twitter and TikTok as well as mentor through @LBMentorship. Most DMs I get are looking for advice on how to enter the games industry.

While I can't advise each person individually, here are some resources that I hope will help.

First a master thread on all the job hunting sites:
