So, if you care about a) effective governance b) liberal/progressive values and/or c) the anti-Trump electoral coalition you ought to see the Afghan withdrawal effort as a chance to learn and do better, not a chance to brand everyone w/a critique a closet imperialist. A thread. Effective governance: if part of the problem is govt departments that atrophied under Trump or before, we need to fix that, not laugh it off. This thought-provoking essay deserves to be added to the China debate canon. My main critique is that Tooze skips awfully quickly from confrontation to detente... (and yes, if you’re a Sovietologist of a certain age you know what I did there) 1/x Without exploring whether it will in fact be possible to sustain American democracy and settle the US into an equal or junior partner role to “manage the risks of the anthropocene.” That’s the question asked by thoughtful China hawks, and it’s a fair one. 2/

2019 is a golden age for debate over American national security strategy. Over ar @lawfareblog, I review14 (!) recent pieces for trends in the debate over what to do post-Trump. How should Americans understand ourselves and our relationship to the world? lawfareblog.com/more-diplomacy… Some trends: I can't think of a time in human history when as broadly representative (by no means perfect) swathe of society involved in strategy debate. Kudos in particular to @CNASdc and @ForeignAffairs, who included younger and older, D, R and Libertarian, M/F, blob/non-blob.
