This is one of @manifestive's hardest Hip-Hop track. One of those tracks he decided to go totally bonkers. At a point you say "fuck it, let's do this". On this track, which appears on the #NoWhereCool album together with #DamnYouRafiki, Mdot showed us his lyrical dexterity, his mettle as the consummate rap artiste. It isn't just the bars he's spitting. It's what he's doing with these bars. He's drunk on them, and spitting & reasoning & rhyming & flowing & making his statement & staking his claim.

Post Azonto Blues
———
Azonto is a subgenre of Hiplife in Ghana. It became a fad around 2013. Blues is melancholy & the generally low levels of energy. Post Azonto Blues therefore references the overall melancholy amongst people post-Azonto. After the wave passed. ———

Right off the bat, Mdot establishes the comparative categories or a taxonomic classification—the elephant (class mammalia) and the ant (class insecta).

Damn You Rafiki
———
Damn You Rafiki follows the trajectory of #BEAR, #NoLongTalk, #KeepShining, & #GodMC. It's about a rapper making a bold statement about his rap artistry & skills set. It's an exhibition of lyrical prowess, dexterity & technical knowhow

Rafiki is Swahili for "friend"—Damn You Friend. "Damn You" is used to express anger, especially when used in a heated argument. However, if it's used in a non-incendiary banter, it could be interpreted as playful. ImageImage

Your ability to speak a language is not correlated to, or does not guarantee, your ability to read & write that language.

The way we speak our local language is different from the way we write it. In fact, the language we speak is an adulterated version of what it really is. As you move away from the center of a language, the language gets diluted. Hence, what most of you claim to be speaking isn't a truer version of your language. This is why when you visit your hometowns you hear terminologies/vocabularies you don't understand.

I've had this hypothesis for some time now with respect to the developmental gap between developed & undeveloped countries.

Developed country, at the start of their nationhood, were ruled by doers, the intelligentsia, owners of industry. This made them focus on production. Their laws & actions were all geared towards creating/producing things that contribute to growth & development. Laws were meant to support industry because owners of industry were part of the lawmakers. They were not professional politicians.

Keep Shining
———
"Keep Shining" is a 2014 track by M.anifest, produced by Coptic. It could be what made me a M.anifest fan, or "Forget Dem." I've forgotten.
"Keep Shining" is a hard-hitting Hip-Hop track suffused with the usual dose of Hip-Hop braggadociosness. It's similar to some of the songs the rapper would later produce, such as #NoLongTalk and #BEAR.

Cupid's Crooked Bow
———
This track is on the #NoWhereCool album—that monumental piece of art, that definite rap album loved by all—critics, rapheads, & laymen alike. Cupid's Crooked Bow is the love interpretation of #NoWhereCool.

M.anifest is a virtuoso in album making—messaging, interpretation of title into each track with each track addressing a different angle of the title, & track arrangement.

The GodMC enlisted the support of Nomisupasta (Nomi-super star) on this track.

Someway Bi
——————
In 2015 M.anifest's single "Someway bi" earned him a third-place honour in the International Songwriters Competition (ISC). This is an indication of how technically good this song is.
"Someway Bi" is pidgin for "things are complicated" or "things are kind of illogical".

It's used when you can't find words to describe a situation you're going through or the way you're feeling. Though when a follow-up question is asked, you can present the situation.

Invisible
————
M.anifest has captured the underbelly of society exposing its rot, hypocrisy & the survival pathways of the unseen. Invisible is an essay on hypocrisy of society & the sweltering sweat of the unseen economic agents in a country
that does not seem to care about the economic & psychological well-being of its citizens.

Mdot paints vivid pictures of the things we will wish to turn a blind eye—the "Invisible".

Most of the young folks today think African music has been limited to the continent & that it's today's musicians who are exporting our music to the world. Nothing can be far from the truth than this conception/perception.

Baseline knowledge vs Legacy knowledge

Legacy knowledge is the entire set of knowledge one depends on without really adding on. People who stop learning depend on legacy knowledge all through their life. In old age, we virtually depend on legacy knowledge for every day tasks. This is why rapid changes, especially technological, ruffle old people; because they are unable to rely on their legacy knowledge & must give up or call for help.

And indeed he’s taken to music
And I’m very proud of that because I wish
I had those kinds of creative skills
The lyrics are tremendou
——— The intro is from a man who's proud of his son's career path/choice. In reality it's from Mdot's father, Tsatsu Tsikata. It should be stated that this statement was made during an interview with the dad, on CitiFm.

Dokita Kwame Nkrumah
Yɛ frɛ wo
Gye yɛn so
Osagyefo gye yɛn so

This is how libation to the gods & ancestors begins. We first call on them & beg them to hear us out. As a direct translation: Dr Kwame Nkrumah
We call you
Respond to our call
Osagyefo, respond to our call

Nkrumah is one of those ancestors you can call upon. Usually, the ancestors who're remembered are those who played significant role—through their bravery, selfless acts, magnanimity, etc—in society.

As part of #BlackHistoryMonth, we take a lyrical journey from Western Sudan to Naija to reclaim & celebrate our history with #Sankofa by M.anifest.

The breakdown

Sankofa

Intro
Uhuh, go back…
Go back and reclaim it…
———
The intro is just an interpretation of the title—Sankofa; or more properly "San kɔ fa"—Go back & take. It's from the proverb, "Sɛ wo werɛ fi na wo san kɔ fa a, yɛnkyi"—It's not a taboo or an abomination to go back for something you've forgotten.

Over & Under
———————
M.anifest opened this song with the chorus. To feel over & under is to be completely "beaten" by life's situations or overwhelmed by life. It's almost like being in a state of despair with no hope—hanging onto one's last breath & seeing no help from anywhere. M.anifest is considered "one of the few socially conscious rappers on the continent"—(Howard University) & this is confirmed by many of his songs that brazenly tackle social life. Whether it is Suffer, Someway Bi, Blue, Hubris,Plenty Feelings, We Dey Manage,
