Today the U.S. Senate voted against halting weapons shipments to Israel, despite 61% of Americans supporting that.

Why? Because dark money group @AIPAC has spent over $100 million on political campaigns this year alone.

But this speaks to a larger issue 1/7 🧵 It’s easy for someone like myself, who @AIPAC targeted because I see Palestinians as deserving of self-determination, to criticize that lobby for this vote and their actions.

They’re wrong in what they stand for.

But they aren’t the only group that operates this way.

VP Harris and Gov. Walz are not on a victory tour, they’re on a job interview.

Being condescending to protesters who represent over 100k votes in a crucial swing state is like being condescending to a hiring manager in a job interview. The Harris-Walz campaign is enjoying a surge of energy in *LARGE* part because the youth & progressive voting blocks are re-energized after months of anti-Biden protests.

Things don’t have to go back to how they were, but talking down to protesters and without policy changes, the campaign risks going right back to the position the Biden campaign was in two and a half weeks ago.

What is the reason the majority of Americans disapproved of Israel’s military action in Gaza, yet our elected officials keep sending Israel bombs?

Corruption.

AIPAC lobbies these politicians.

But it’s not just AIPAC 🧵 What is the reason the majority of Americans support universal healthcare, yet our elected officials don’t pass Medicare for All?

Corruption.

The insurance companies lobbies these politicians.

The difference between liberals and *actual* progressives is that liberals see the rise of MAGA and Trump as a symptom of an “unwell” country, while *actual* progressives see the rise as a result of a political system that doesn’t meet the needs of the people.

🧵 1/6 FDR, while certainly not perfect, was able to remain in power so long because he fought on the side of the working class instead of the ruling class.

Now, the Democratic establishment—the major donors and power brokers—oppose any candidate that takes on that same fight.

Our current system of meat production isn’t sustainable for our environment.

That being said, poor people do deserve fresh meat so long as that is our way of life.

We can move towards sustainability without ‘othering’ poor people. I’ve read responses to my tweet regarding the Iowa’s GOP bill to bar EBT purchases of fresh meat and have noticed people trying to find a silver lining of reduced meat consumption—even having my of progressiveness questioned for not appreciating that silver lining.

Twitter employees should have unionized. No one should be able to buy a company and fire half the staff.

It’s the principle of it.

I come from a part of the country that has been decimated due to decades of billionaires taking over industries and cutting jobs. If you’re from the rust belt—and I know certain politicians want us to stop calling it that, but that’s what billionaires made it—watching billionaires buy companies and immediately cut jobs should spark something in you.

I don’t care if these are tech jobs.

According to a recent Gallup poll, the percentage of Americans that have a lot of confidence in:

The Supreme Court: 2️⃣5️⃣%
The Presidency: 2️⃣3️⃣%
Congress: 7️⃣%

All-time lows for each.

Why that’s the case and how we move forward: THREAD 🧵

1/11 WHY #1: BIG MONEY IN POLITICS.

The influence of big money makes people feel like their voices aren’t heard: they’re right.

70% of Americans support Medicare for All, but the insurance lobby doesn’t, so we don’t see any movement on that legislation.

A 10-year-old girl was denied abortion services in Ohio.

10.

So no, I’m not ok with the Democratic Party’s response federally simply being “vote in November.”

Residents in my state can’t wait till November and 10-year-olds can’t vote.

Here’s what they should be doing.

1/
The Biden administration should be greenlighting clinics to operate on federal lands. No, this doesn’t mean building abortion clinics in Yellowstone, it means allowing patients to be seen for service at pop-up clinics in places like Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

This didn’t start 6 years ago. The GOP has been planning this for 50 years.

It’s important to acknowledge the structural damage they’ve inflicted along the way if we want to fix it moving forward. It’s started with Nixon, then Reagan, then the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000 with Bush stealing the election.

Then redistricting in 2010.

Then overturning Citizens United.

This has been a long time coming and putting this all on one election 6 years ago is dangerous.

With @POTUS changing his stance on the filibuster to codify Roe, it’s on the People to pressure Manchin, Sinema, Collins & Murkowski.

All of them should be on board with carving out the filibuster for this. .@Sen_JoeManchin voted in December 2021 to carve out the filibuster to raise the debt ceiling.

In a public statement on Roe being overturned, he admits that two justices lied to him on their stance of Roe being settled law.

Each branch of government is co-equal.

Democrats hold the executive and legislative branches of government.

Roe was overturned by the judicial branch.

It’s time for the checks and balances to start checking and balancing. I don’t care what Manchin or Sinema have to say—they’ve both acknowledged this ruling is out of line and they abolished the filibuster in December 2021. They should be willing to talk.

Abolish the filibuster.

Young voters are the working class, Joe. Blaming voters isn’t it. I’d like to know who exactly you mean by “working class,” @JoeWalsh.

Because I stood on a picket line in Bedford Heights, OH with Black women, white men, Black men, AAPI women, and we discussed things from wages to how their trans coworkers were being treated.

The crisis in America is that special interest groups like the NRA can buy politicians. It’s corruption. Pundits will say America has a gun crisis, we have a lack of action crisis.

Special interests like the NRA buy politicians to stop gun legislation.

Big Oil buys politicians to stop climate legislation.

I’m running for Congress because for too long, cities like Cleveland have been sacrificed. We’re the poorest city with a population over 250,000.

I won Cleveland last year by 10 points and the poorest ward in the city by 9.5 points. I’m fighting to change these places. The poorest areas of #OH11 are with me because they know I’m with them.

While my opponent takes money from billionaires who don’t give a damn about this city, who advocate against policies that would help the people of this city, I choose integrity.

This campaign is about valuing the dignity of all people. I am proud of my relationship with Cleveland's Jewish community, both as a City Councilwoman and State Senator.

I stand with the Jewish community and all the people of Greater Cleveland—yesterday, today and always. But don’t take it from me, take it from members of the Jewish community in Greater Cleveland who know me: clevelandjewishnews.com/opinion/letter…

The average American is more likely to become homeless than become a billionaire. The best indicator of someone’s probability of becoming wealthy is if they come from wealth.

Billionaires are a product of a system that is rigged to favor the wealthy and well-connected. Want proof? The three richest men in America are:

@elonmusk: net worth $219B
@JeffBezos: net worth $171B
@BillGates: net worth $129B

1. We need to bring back the Child Tax Credit—@RashidaTlaib has a bill for that and it’ll be the first bill I co-sponsor in Congress.

2. Clevelanders need Medicare for All—I’ll fight for that by not taking money from the health insurance lobby. 3. We need to cancel student debt and make college and trade schools tuition-free—if children are living in poverty, their parents live in poverty. It’s time we give people better opportunities.

Senator @BernieSanders sparked a movement in this country that is stronger than ever. This movement continues to fight against the special interests who are blocking the President’s agenda and holding back progress for the poor, the working poor, and the barely middle class. In order for this administration and our party to succeed, we need the everyday people of this country to succeed.  And that requires a leader who won’t hesitate because they take corporate money but instead a change-maker and a fighter.
