(1/7) France seeking a Wagner terrorist designation and the UK is considering it, but that's just a starting point. It's worth looking at what measures will degrade their operations. Thread on three near-term policies and one long-term rethink. aljazeera.com/news/2023/5/10… (2/7) 1st is to trap Wagner, affiliates, and members in international and municipal legal systems. It makes joining more risky for recruits and is a necessary step for victims seeking justice. I argued in @BylineTimes that the UK could lead this: bylinetimes.com/2023/02/02/wag…

(1/5) A claim is making the rounds that Shahed attacks on Ukraine a night or two before missile strikes are to "locate AA sites." It's not impossible, but there's lots of reasons to doubt that with the data we have. A short thread: (2/5) For starters, Shaheds probably can't "find" an AA site, even they maintain a datalink with a GCS in flight (big assumption) operators would only really know where it was intercepted. They wouldn't know what kind of AA hit it or where it fired from. rusi.org/explore-our-re…

1/5 I want to talk about this "Analysis" Chuck Pfarrer just posted because its a great example of people adopting the vocabulary of intelligence analysis to disguise their work as something its not 2/5 For starters, its clear Chuck has seen (maybe not read) an intelligence product before. There's an map of Crimea letting us know where the sat images are and an "assessment" box. In form alone, its not TOO different from a component command's current intel product.

1/ A couple people (mainly students and academics) ask me how I put out these 900-1100 word articles/op-eds on the side. That's funny considering they're writing thousands of words regularly, but I thought I'd make a quick 🧵on my path through various publications, and some tips: 2/ As a caveat, my writing is NOT reporting. That's a profession, done by professionals. What I write tends to be a discussion of something in the news that adds context for readers, or an op-ed where I try (and usually fail) to present a coherent argument.

1/🧵How do you shootdown a Shahed-136? #Ukraine has a lot of options, but none of them are a silver bullet for this problem by themselves. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-632805… 2/ Firstly, you need to detect them with enough warning to prepare your Air Defense. This is most efficiently done with Radar. Contrary to popular belief, you can detect drones with Radar, even if they fly low and slow, see @Mauro_Gilli and others direct.mit.edu/isec/article/4…
