1 Thread on #mpox which is in the news again since a returning traveller was diagnosed in Sweden with a new more dangerous strain which reached Europe for the first time.

In the 2022-23 global outbreak I was clinical advisor to @WHOEurope

Here’s what I think you need to know. Image 2/
What does mpox look like:

Painful sores and ulcers on the body especially around the anus and genitals, as well as ulcers in the mouth and genitals.
My group @shareresearch @QMUL published the largest series on clinical features in the @nejm.

📢 Published today in @NEJM to aid #monkeypox diagnosis:

A global collaborative case series led by @ShareEastLondon @QMUL describing 528 confirmed infections from 43 centres in 16 countries + an image library.

@rcgp @RCPhysicians

bit.ly/3PGg7js @JohnPThornhill🧵 2/Before April 2022, MPXV in humans was seldom reported outside African regions where it is endemic. Currently, cases are occurring globally. Transmission, risk factors, clinical presentation & outcomes of infection are poorly defined. MPXV research has been grossly underfunded
