A morning thread on the Atlanta shootings... one thing I’ve been thinking about is how the rush to attribute the violence to One True Motive has actually made it harder to understand it in all its complexities.
It’s natural to want to make sense of it immediately. But in the absence of accurate information, that instinct can send us astray. See: the Pulse massacre. It was immediately understood as a hate crime targeting the lgbtq community. Only much later did we learn this was untrue.

I've covered a lot of mass shootings in which women are the primary victims. So often, the perpetrators are driven by a desire to dominate, to subjugate, to feel bigger, to right some imaginary wrong. At the root of both misogyny and racism is oppression.
And it should go without saying, but the person who caused harm is not a reliable narrator when it comes to motive. Police, and news outlets, should not take their claims as fact.
