A whole lot of people see the inequity in how the @CalgaryPolice deals with different groups of protestors. Itā€™s an issue that has existed for decades, but is most perfectly proven by the ā€œfreedomā€ people.

When will @CalgaryPolice start to see it? Before the weekend, I hope! Itā€™s actually absurd to think of how supportive @CalgaryPolice have been of the ā€œfreedomā€ people. The level of accommodation of the ā€œfreedomā€ group is far beyond anything else.

I think we all know whatā€™s different about that group vs. most groups that gather for protests.

Will groups born out of police oppression like Black Lives Matter and Pride get the same extensive support from police instantly and automatically, just like the ā€œfreedomā€ group?

Imagine exact the same tactics were usedā€¦ If the answer is yes, then @CalgaryPolice has my support! Iā€™m very supportive of the right to peacefully protest. It is a cornerstone of how our society has moved forward.

But Iā€™m struck by how starkly different the police response has been to the recent ā€œfreedomā€ protests.

Thereā€™s obviously an important conversation to be had.

You know what? @CalgaryPolice has made me realize that Calgarians can hold a weekly, impromptu Pride Parade through the streets of downtown without permits or paying for policing.

It can take over any and all parks, and vendors are welcome to set up shop wherever they like! @CalgaryPolice Alberta's LGBTQ+ community certainly has things to protest as there are all kinds of ways that the community continues to be held back from living freely and openly in Calgary.

The conflict is being caused by the policeā€™s refusal to enforce laws and finally protect the rights of the residents of Calgaryā€™s Beltline and Downtown communities.

After months and months, itā€™s time to stop this weekly disruption and harassment of residents. Itā€™s appalling to see this response from @CalgaryPolice after enabling a never-ending, illegal weekly parade that blockades roads in the downtown Calgary area, not to mention the weekly harassment endured by residents trying to go about their daily lives.

We keep having to ask the questionā€¦ Would every group thatā€™s protesting something be allowed to block roads, disrupt neighbourhoods, and harass residents on a weekly basis, dozens and dozens of times?

We all know that this group is being given special treatment. It has to stop. These ā€œfreedomā€ people are blocking roads. Thatā€™s supposed to be illegal, no?

They are costing the police millions in overtime.

They are costing businesses countless dollars of lost revenue.

But the police are completely powerless, right?

Itā€™s time for the so-called ā€œfreedomā€ protests in downtown Calgary to end.

Residents of the Beltline deserve to live in peace just like everyone else.

And this aggressive treatment of counter protestors by @CalgaryPolice is completely unacceptable. It must never happen again. These protests no longer carry any meaning at all. They have disrupted a neighbourhood of over 20,000 people for over two years. They have caused damage to hundreds of business that were already suffering.

Enough is enough.

How can anyone have right to do this week after week?

Jason Kenney's UCP has gutted municipal election rules. We're basically back to the same situation as we've always had. Wealthy individuals and companies (through third party campaigns) can pour vast sums of money into campaigns. cbc.ca/news/canada/edā€¦ A common scenario in the past was for wealthy folks - frequently wealthy people with a financial interest in the election outcome - can donate through multiple family members and cover $10K - $20K+ for each of multiple candidates.

I listened to a number of conversion therapy speakers at #yyccc tonight.

From those who support conversion therapy, I heard a lot of the same things we've heard throughout the LGBTQ civil rights struggle. Essentially, if something is "religious", it can never be regulated.

Essentially, even if a religious practise leads to direct harm on another person, it is above debate because it is religious dogma.

Obviously, I disagree with that bizarre line of thinking. But, I also want to question who gets to own what is considered a regious belief.

Rachel Notley spoke out on behalf of Cargill workers on Apr 16th. She and her team talked with workers, heard their stories.

UCP had every staffer and MLA attack her, saying Cargill did everything right. How dare she criticize them!?

Now hundreds are sick and one is dead. In the many, many tweets UCP's staffers and MLAs put out attacking Ms. Notley, not one that I can find mentions any communication with actual workers at the plant.

Government is supposed to be there to protect vulnerable workers, not to do PR for Cargill.

Based on whatā€™s been shared in this thread, Jason Kenneyā€™s lay-off of over 25,000 people yesterday is likely the second largest single layoff announcement by in Canadian history.

As yet, no other provincial government has laid off large numbers of workers, and none likely will. Even if most of these workers get federal assistance, this will still pull tens of millions (maybe hundreds of millions) out of the economy.

Plus, many folks will face additional interest payments because they are forced to defer mortgage and other debt payments.

As a business owner, I have no confidence in the Kenney governmentā€™s economic plan. It seems more important to be ideologically pure than tied to evidence-backed approaches. Itā€™s like weā€™re banking solely on a tax cut for large businesses, and not much else. In addition, for businesses that need to attract young talent from around the world, the governmentā€™s approach to human rights and social issues seems certain to be a talent-repellant.

Plus, massive government cuts during a recession seems Iā€™ll-advised. Why make things worse?

In case you missed it... There is a political party trying to take over the Calgary Public School Board. They say slate, but it's a party. How do we know it's a party? It's got a party platform - with clearly poll-driven policies. Literally the issues with the best poll numbers.
