I've been thinking about how Product Teams orientate themselves as they scale...and what things they might then look after.

So, a few thoughts on how Metrics, Outcomes & Flywheels might help here...

Warning: TIP (thought-in-progress)

Metrics...

I expect this will be a divisive opinion...but I'm starting to feel that for the majority of teams, goal setting that include metrics are a bit pointless.

(1/8) Now, I don't think that goal setting, or metrics, are pointless. Both are really important!

But the combination of the two is odd for most teams.

Why? Because its usually almost impossible for them to be reasonable & as a result it only causes tension.

Thinking about balance in teams.

Their preferences & capabilities to 'Sense' & then 'Respond'.

These may be modes people can switch between...but without capability across both there's likely to be unresolved tension. (1/6) Image Sensing and Responding could also be...

- Strategy vs Tactics
- Discovery vs Delivery
- Long term vs Short Term
etc.

I created this image a little while ago to visualise different ways I've seen Product Teams work.

Someone asked me to explain them a little further...so I shall...(1/8) 'Transformation'

Usually seen in large orgs trying to shift from 'waterfall', by still doing 'waterfall' but calling it 'Agile'.

Lots of process very little progress.

It might look like collaboration, but its anything but effective. All comms are through 'mgmt' (2/8)

When will it be ready? (1/8) Image Yes, its often a very hard question to answer, but its also a valid one to ask.

If you don't take control of the answer...other people will.

So, where do you start? (2/8)

As Product People we want to ALWAYS start with the problem.

In reality, sometimes, that's not possible.

Sometimes you have to find 'the why' on 'the way'.

How? 👇 (1/6) It's obvious to most outside of the perfect product environment, that there is a need for compromise when it comes to how stuff gets done.

If you always push back with a 'why' or a 'what's the outcome' you can find yourself removed from the conversations entirely...(2/6)

I'm increasingly convinced that in some companies
the push for being 'Product-Led' is leading to a catastrophic misfire.

They incorrectly establish a 'Product-Fed' culture.

Some thoughts...

👇 (1/9) The original intention behind the 'Product-Led' movement was to infer that we would create a proposition that centres around an increasingly more valuable Product - rather than whatever Sales et al. sell or the biggest customers demand...(2/9)

There is A LOT of Product Management Theory.

But very little about how you work with people (and yourself!) to get things done.

For me, it comes down to understanding and improving Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
