icymi: the first politician to attend PinkDot was Vincent Wijeysingha.

he was part of the SDP team that ran in Holland-Bukit Timah in 2011, garnering 39.9% of the votes even after a smear campaign by the PAP team. In 2011, Parliament was dissolved on 19 April, Nomination Day was on 27 April, and the election was held on 7 May.

the drama started early, with a mysterious video posted on Youtube on 14 Apr

(the video is still available, uploaded by JohnTan88888, look it up)

nothing in singapore would exist without migrant workers.

nothing.

not your schools, not your hdbs, not your train stations, not your hospitals.

not the skyscrapers, not mbs, not jewel.

your GDP per capita is literally their blood, sweat, tears and lives. you can argue as much as you want abt whether it's financially feasible to transport them in buses or not, improve their dormitories, provide healthcare, whatever.

but there's no running away from the fact that *nothing* about life here is possible without their exploitation.

eleven thousand, five hundred and sixty-three days.

that's how long it's taken to "shield workers from the elements" by fitting lorries with rain covers.

singapore's gdp was what, 38 billion in 1990?
380 billion last year?

we still can't afford to transport workers in buses?

"i want to answer this phone call from a child in need of my help" is very different from "i HAVE to answer this phone call from an annoying af parent who wants to ask me stupid fucking questions bc if not they will complain to my boss about me."

hope that helps. bringing back this article:

i'm putting together a timeline of news articles about the home recovery scheme and it's really not hard to see how this was a disaster in the making 😔 Aug 6 (97 cases)

"changing healthcare protocols".

no mention of home recovery

more cases to be shifted to CCFs to reduce burden on hospitals.

at this point, ~40% of cases were being admitted to CCFs - fair to assume the rest are in hospitals?

Let's talk about Bethel Church, what it has to do with Singapore, and what it means to import "culture wars".

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethel_Ch… Bethel Church is a megachurch in Redding, California. It has its own music label for worship music. It was launched in 2001, but grew rapidly 2009 - 2014...

(which incidentally reflect a similar timeline as City Harvest Church & Sun Ho's Crossover Project.)

earlier this year, we met a friend who does neuroscience research overseas. we talked about their work for a while, and also abt ~drugs~

specifically NS research on drugs like ketamine and LSD being used to treat mental illnesses

couple of days later, both V and I got this ad it's a Very Expensive (SGD 120,000 per week!) drug rehab facility in switzerland. i'm gonna skip discussing the creepiness of our phones listening in on us 🥴

i didn't realise the significance of the ad until a few months later, when i saw this tweet

"He found that there was collusion by the family, who had "improper motives" and wanted to stop her from going to the authorities."

straitstimes.com/singapore/cour… here, the photos that should actually be in the news.

Liew Mun Leong is also Chairman of Surbana Jurong btw!!

His son though... In another case, a judge found Karl Liew to be “a dishonest and evasive witness, whose evidence was riddled with inconsistencies.”

i don't know who made the police reports or these images but they were both shared on the Singapore Matters FB page, a pro-PAP page that's willing to play fast and loose with facts. she wasn't the only one to ask about perceived differences in sentencing and/or enforcement. the police statement is misrepresenting her questions as comments or statements of fact.

Internally wrestled with making this thread all day because it seems petty. But I also think it's important, so here goes.

I know lots of big things are happening right now, but we're also watching the erasure of Preeti and Subhas Nair's work happen in real time. This thought was prompted by @Jenlky's question following discussion of the racist, xenophobic letter published by Zaobao.

There's been a lot written about 'brownface' in Singapore in the last week. Conversations mostly seem to go like this:

"Hey that shit is offensive."
"No, it's funny."
"But it's like blackface."
"Blackface is from America, stop bringing up stupid liberal talk." On 5 Aug, Indranee Rajah (Member of Parliament and a Minister) published a piece, mentioning how the Black and White Minstrel Show was 'quite acceptable' in the 60s and 70s.

i legit don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this imaginary black market for gum. SG’s population is 7m. More people than that can’t afford insulin in the US, and there’s definitely a blavk market for that. black*, damnit. it's been 19 hours and i'm still thinking about chewing gum so here's a thread, i guess.

The Gift of Fear, by Gavin de Becker "Predatory animals devour prey in order to convert flesh into fuel. Most human predators, however, seek power, not food. To destroy or damage something is to take its power. To push a pie into the face of the world's richest man is to take his power, if only for a moment."
