Today @PNASNews published one of the most important studies I've conducted. We asked: do international treaties produce the effects their negotiators intended? The short answer is "no".

To start, treaties are often used by countries to address issues that transcend national boundaries, like the environment, human rights, humanitarian crises, maritime issues, security and trade. Today there are at least 250,000 treaties, yet few have been evaluated for impact.

For 10 weeks we worked on one of the most ambitious efforts I’ve ever led – the @UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery, which was released today. un.org/en/pdfs/UNCOVI…#COVID19Recovery#UNResearchRoadmap#COVID19 has exposed stark global inequities, fragilities and unsustainable practices that pre-date this pandemic and have intensified its impact. Recovering better from COVID-19 will depend on bold efforts and new knowledge. That means science!
