Does your team run weekly meetings? Or are you thinking of starting?

I’ve been asked many times about how @podia runs our weekly ~20 minute long all hands meeting.

We’ve been using the same format for 3 years (with small tweaks) and it’s worked really well for us.

A thread 👇 It all starts with a weekly email — I’ve written 150+! — I send on Saturdays.

Here’s how I write the email and run the meeting.

Free startup idea as I'm busy with @podia. 😉

@twitch meets @patreon for live streaming education.

A thread 👇 You hire a handful of instructors who cover a variety of subjects from math to reading to science.

Each instructor streams a few hours a day at assigned intervals.

The metrics that mattered when we launched @podia are not the metrics that matter today as a profitable company.

Now, there are 18 metrics we track every month.

Here’s what they are, and why they’re important to us 👇 (1) Bank balance

This is pretty obvious. No money, no business.

Decide how much cushion you want to keep in there to give yourself peace of mind.

You can be aggressive with your cash management, or you can be conservative.

We tend to err on the conservative side.

Incoming backlash…

As an entrepreneur, taking a vacation is really difficult.

I can’t speak for all founders, but if you started a business that you love, being completely disconnected from it is probably painful for you, too.

A thread 👇 It’s especially difficult during COVID-19 when you can’t really go anywhere. 😢

But let’s put COVID-19 aside for now…

How @podia has maintained an NPS score between 65 and 75 for the past 3 years.

Currently, our NPS is at 68.

A thread 👇 An NPS score of 68 puts us in the top 0.01% of all companies.

A few other tech companies for context (according to @hubspot):

- @zappos: 58
- @apple: 68

Podia hit profitability this year. 🤑📈

Here’s how we built @podia into a profitable company.

A thread 👇 Even though we raised a small round of venture capital early on (first in 2015), we made it clear to ourselves and our investors that we had a 10-year plan with specific milestones we wanted to hit.

At first glance, many new startups entering a market often appear similar to their competitors, yet that’s rarely the case as time goes by (+ why incumbents dismissing them as mere copycats are putting themselves in danger).

A thread 👇 New startups mostly build products for existing markets. The customers in that market have a certain set of needs that the founder(s) are familiar with, so they start by solving what they know needs to be solved with their own unique perspective.

How many tools does it take to run a 5-year-old SaaS business in 2020?

For @podia, it’s a total of 64 tools across the company (operations, product, development, marketing, and support)!

Thought it might be fun to share the tools we use with you all 👇 Team-wide tools 💜: @trello @basecamp @dropbox @SLAB @gsuite @LatticeHQ @slack @zoom_us @1Password

If you're an entrepreneur looking to build tools for #remote teams because you anticipate more teams will go remote due to #coronavirus concerns, here are some ideas/thoughts for you. 💡 First of all, being a remote team is a lifestyle choice. We aren't 👽’s from another planet. Our problems aren't necessarily that different from teams who work in an office.

What makes a successful startup (my thoughts on team, product, revenue, focus, customers, and more): Trust in the people you work with. Let them do their jobs or don’t hire them in the first place.

I've bootstrapped 3 startups and raised money for 1, here are my thoughts on bootstrapping 👢 vs. raising money 💰: In 2018, the quality bar has never been higher for startups. You need 💯 design, product, copy and marketing. As a bootstrapper, you're forced to make sacrifices in one or more of those areas. This makes it harder for you to win.

A lot of misconceptions about being a solo founder, here are some of my thoughts: Team communication is better without a co-founder. Not having a co-founder means that there’s less room for miscommunication with the team as co-founders are often not on the same page.

A lot of people have been asking my thoughts on remote work. Here they are in no particular order: is used by creators all over the 🌎. Having remote people from all across the 🌎 helps you build a better product for them.
