Thread: I have been trying to think through where the war in #Ukraine might be headed, and what has to happen to bring it to an end. Here are a few tentative thoughts: 1) It is quite possible that none of the major parties in the Ukraine crisis/war are going to achieve their maximum goals. In this scenario, Putin won't get a quick victory, a docile Ukrainian puppet state, a weak and divided NATO, and a rapid return to business as usual. Good.

Dan Deudney & John Ikenberry have published an essay attacking what they call the “Quincy Coalition” (QC): a loose group of realists, progressives, & libertarians who favor a more restrained foreign policy. This is a long thread on what’s wrong with their article. It is a remarkable article, primarily because it is so bad. You can find it here: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

1. Here is a thread on research projects that don't go as we might have hoped. 2. In a candid survey of his career in ANNUAL REVIEWS, Bob Keohane briefly describes a book-length project on reputation and compliance that he ultimately chose not to publish, in part because the evidence didn't fit his initial conjectures. annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.11…

A short thread on the significance on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Israel. My take: It’s not meaningless, but neither is it a transformative, landmark event. Here’s my reasoning: First, the UAE and Israel have been collaborating in various ways for a long time, driven mostly by opposition to Iran.  Diplomatic recognition is a nice symbolic gesture, but doesn’t alter that reality very much.

I am a huge fan of @ProfPaulPoast and I'm in awe of his threads about teaching IR. But I rise to offer a respectful dissent to this tweet:
To be fair, Paul has a longer and thoughtful threa on the subject here:
Here's my reaction: I've been teaching a course on realism for several years. It uses a lot of "classic" texts: Thucydides, Kautilya, Machiavelli, Hobbes,Schmitt, etc. There are plenty of "modern" realists too (Carr, Spykman, Niebuhr, Morgenthau, Waltz, JJM etc. ), along w/some important critics.

I recently got an email from the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins, inviting me to register for and watch an online forum on “World Order after COVID 19.” sais.jhu.edu/kissinger/worl… I clicked on the link and looked at the agenda. On the one hand, the program looked interesting, mainly because several of the panels featured experts in public health, law, bioethics, etc., topics not normally included in events dealing with foreign policy, grand strategy, or “world order.”
