Damn this is gaining a LOT OF traction.

There is an “ABA tactic” called chaining that breaks tasks down into small pieces. It is arguably one of the less harmful ABA tactics, and I’m assuming that’s what tactic was used to teach shoe tying. (1/) The issue then is not the method that was used, it’s that, LITERALLY anyone can use chaining. ABA came up with a name for it. That’s it. It’s not hard to use.

Still a weird goal, and still an ableist thing to proclaim that the kid can now make friends cause he can tie shoes.

Here I go again, being all tiresome, right Angela? @theJagmeetSingh - you will recieve a letter from me, and several other autistic people, parents of autistic children, and professionals urging you to examine ABA before listening to this open letter. OAC has not been honest in this letter. Their leadership is primarily BCBAs who are members of @ONTABA1 - meaning that their livelihoods depend on funding ABA services, and keeping critisism of ABA to a minimum.

Hm.. okay. So, I’ve been diagnosed twice, once at 16 (I refused to let them put it on paper.) and once at 22. 🧵 Both times involved questionnaires and several multiple hour sessions in which I had to answer questions about all aspects of my life childhood to… literally the day before the assessment. I had a neuropsych eval as well (this is not always required). I still have imposter

There are many papers and literature showing ABA doesn’t work long term, and is ineffective. People profoundly affected by autism can and do benefit from MANY other therapies, which have been shut out and left unfunded because #ABA has KEPT them shut out. I fight this shit every day. Every. Day. And the SECOND that SOMEONE in power dares to speak up, they are met with people threatening them and REFUSING!! to listen. It is beyond upsetting. ABA for autism treatment is a cult. And if you’re a parent whose against it, you better be

So… rather than a promise to do better.. you bash autistic folks, lie about them, all to keep making money? This is a terrible look @ONTABA1, but I’m not suprised.

Several parents are also against ABA. So are many ECES, OTs and SLPs. (1) FYI: Lovaas is a HUGE reason that ABA is used on the autistic population. Whether or not he was the founder is irrelevant when he has done SO MUCH HARM, and was the author of one of the seminal studies (which was proven to be partially fabricated as per (2)
