Is Nutrition The Key To A GKs Concentration❓

🧤
It has been shown that on average elite level GKs typically perform 4-10 ‘defensive actions’ per game, all at high intensity.

1/11 💥🚀
These actions are very short in duration, often with long intervals in between them. Therefore, whist physical fatigue may not be the issue for GKs during match-play, the ability to concentrate and focus for those prolonged periods, may be the deciding factor.

✈️ Up in the air but how do they land🦵

(Thread)

GKs don’t hop to set. They hop to self organise their body to dive.

You see a “mistake” and look at twitter you’ll find countless theories regarding why that GK conceded which always leads to a technical / physical error. ImageImageImage But your body will only produce an action as a reaction to what it perceives.

Is the chosen action wrong because of what the brain is telling them to do as opposed to their body “unable to do something” due to set up?

Set up changes according to situation / what you perceive.

‼️ CONFIDENCE & DECISION MAKING ‼️ (Thread)

Ever noticed that the first decision you make in a game tends to set the tone for that match? 🤔 Come and catch a cross clean and you’re able to dominate your area all game 💪

Get caught out sweeping a ball over the top though and you’re glued to your line for every ball after 😰

‼️Pre-Match Rituals (2/2) Thread

Part 1 we asked our followers to share their pre-match rituals
💭

Have you ever wondered why you do the things you do prior to a game? 🤔

Are they worthwhile exercises that improve performance or do they just serve a superstitious purpose❓ While some rituals are better than others, there is no perfect approach for every goalkeeper ❌

However, our friend The Goalkeeper Psychologist has shared the following top tips to make your pre-match ritual more than just a superstition 🙌

💥Pre-Match Rituals (1/2)💥

For part 1 of this series we want to hear from all of our followers about their pre-match rituals 🗣💭

From getting a feel of match ball just before kick-off (R. Bürki) to forbidding anyone from touching your 🧤 on the day of a game (David James) So what are pre-match rituals and what do they do?

Rituals are a series of thoughts and actions that athletes use to trigger themselves into their “Ideal Performance Mindset” 😀😎🤬😱

Not only a top top goalkeeper, but one of the best guys Lee had met in football

Happy birthday Stefan! Image "I learned a lot from him, even though we are different types of goalies. He's one of the nicest people you could meet - it's rare in football to meet someone so genuine and down to earth. He's done everything in the game - winning the Champions league

💥Here’s a little crossing compilation from Lee’s career on the back of @thgkblog article💥

Despite his height (5 foot 10) crosses/high balls were one of his biggest strengths throughout his whole career

thegoalkeepingblog.com/the-trials-tri… Lee got released at 13 for being too small but height had never hindered his career

Can we choose the right action in the shortest amount of time available?

Do we catch, punch, parry? Can we see it early & move feet or dive and react? Stay or go?

@OKKULO1 can give us more time to make the RIGHT DECISION ✅

#themoderndaygk #okkulo #visualsystem #sportsvision Of course there’s athletes out there that are naturally better than others at this but EVERY SINGLE ATHELTE CAN IMPROVE no matter what the level / experience

@OKKULO1 can train the visual system like no other

Why is it that when a striker goes through a goal drought it’s always low confidence yet when a GK goes through a poor spell, his technique can become the issue?🤔

Or if a striker misses few chances nobody seems to comment on height, running style, stance width, body angles, etc Image Likewise when a GK makes an error, we rarely hear pundits blame things like low confidence, personal life struggles, tactical suitability, etc
🤷‍♂️

❗️Why goalkeepers make mistakes❗️
(THREAD)

By “The Goalkeeper Psychology Consultant”

As keepers are returning to play over the coming days and will likely be making far more errors than they’re used to

Most keepers will be quick to blame mistakes on flaws in their technique ❌ ImageImage However, in my experience of playing and working within professional sports, it’s rarely technique that lets the professionals down because you don’t just lose your technique 🙅‍♂️

Instead, mistakes usually happen for one of two reasons:

CONCENTRATION or CONFIDENCE 🤝

(Thread) Regret is one of the most difficult emotional processes to deal with, both in football and in life 😔 When not dealt with, it can lead to significant mental health problems down the line🎗

1/3 Image Whether it’s:
❗️A bad decision in a game
❗️Leaving a club
❗️Turning down an opportunity
❗️Or even saying the wrong thing at the wrong time

Regret is common among goalkeepers 😢

After seeing so many GK Coaches from around the world blaming De Gea’s arm swing for conceding last night, I would like to ask...

Did you tweeet about the same technique when he made that famous save vs. Sevilla? Or that header from Agustin a few years back? ImageImage The difference between a save and a goal here is his choice of going closed fist with his hugely favoured right arm.

If he opens hand up the ball is going to parry downwards and to his left. Because it’s a fist it hits top of knuckle and upwards into the net!

Any young GKs watch and observe the technique it’s simply beautiful goalkeeping!

We love to get Rochdi Karaa’s insights / breakdowns

He’s a true GK Specialist The ability to generate and manage energy functions prior during and after the reaction when working in confined spaces (close to body) and while reaction time is too tight will depend on three vital factors

✅ Body structure
✅ Body weight
✅ Body Tools

⚡️Counter Attack: The Side Volley on the Move🏃‍♂️

✅ Create / Find / Take space
✅ Compose yourself by decelerating with side on approach = better angle to play
✅ Release ball slightly further in front
✅ Keep it flat = space to hit into
✅ Higher = playing over top

1/6 You see a lot of people hitting great side volleys when they’re relaxed from a standing start in training but may struggle to find consistency / quality in games

You’ll most likely use side volley to counter

Catch cross, sprint out & try to play nice accurate / pacy ball

⚽️ RETURNING TO TRAINING HELP⁉️

Hard / Dry Ground

a) When tipping / parrying / full stretch: Roll upon landing as it can reduce load on hip as pressure will be distributed

b) When holding ball from dive / collapse: Use ball to absorb force upon impact with bent arms

1/8 The thought of returning to the field and diving around to save balls on rock hard ground is something which may cause anxiety for a lot of keepers 😰

The fear of injury 🤕 is completely understandable and is something that even pros are secretly worried about 🤫

The dynamic approach, coordinating velocity & lower body intelligence to trade energy while airborne

When landing, results, maintaining energy flow & sustaining a swift transition “If my GK is confident enough to approach the ball with such speed I doubt I will be too worried about him spilling into his own net”
