yesssss yesyesyes look at the whole thread (it's short). I wrestled with this when writing Ruby Finley and I wanna talk about it. This thread will have *minor* spoilers.

It will also make reference to Jem and the Holograms because why not? ONWARD! In the book, Ruby & her bestie Hollie discover something terrible happing in their neighbor's house and need to figure out what to do. Hollie suggests calling 911 and asking for a wellness check.

In the first draft Ruby is wary of this idea since it will bring cops to the block.

This indicates that users are about to start to see a LOT MORE gross stuff on here.

For those who are staying on twitter, here are some tips that could help eliminate the waves of disgusting crap unleashed into the general twitterverse.

🧵 DO. NOT. Look at the algorithmic feed. Just don't. That's how you end up seeing most stuff you don't care to see. Switch to Latest Tweets, which only shows people you follow and their RTs.

"this tweet deleted by the author"

I love it cuz it's like screenshots don't exist. screenshot of the tweet quoted by the person I QTed from Elo Also, those of us who do business on Twitter know for sure this isn't true cuz we see it in our metrics. Add to the fact that the twitter algo actively suppresses tweets with outbound links, even if they come from people you follow.

I hang out on several subreddits about unions and worker's rights and such and in the past couple of years have gotten a deeper education in just how horrendous business-owning oligarchs are.

Still & all, the past couple of weeks have been 😳x 1 million

axios.com/2022/11/13/elo… image of Elongated Muskrat (aka Apartheid Clyde) looking dis One of the dark jokes we keep making in these subs is how Elon is accidentally being a working class hero by doing so many terrible things all at once and making the case for stronger worker protections and unionization.

Plus, that whole Eli Lily thing was glorious.

I still believe that we all have the collective power to do this. However, even if your aim is just to not make Elon any more money, there are things you can do to make your Twitter experience better and cut down on the money the company makes. 🧵 To start, get off the dot com. Don't use that as your primary way to engage or look at Twitter. It's a crap site to start, and there are all those sponsored tweets and ads, and also it'll keep switching you to the algorithm view instead of chronological order.

Things are about to get real chaotic here on twitter dot com. Many are leaving or deeply considering it. Do what you gotta!

Before you leave, please be sure you find out where else you can follow the authors/creatives you love and support.

Now more than ever they need you. Distracted boyfriend meme where the boyfriend looking is &qu I know signing up for newsletters seems like signing up for more blah email. It's still the best way to ensure you know what's up with your fave creators. You might even get cool stuff like discounts or exclusive content. Even if not, you have a way to connect that isn't trash.

The Muskrat is actually buying Twitter, so a bunch of people are leaving or thinking about it.

Before you do, please take the time to check out where else you can follow the authors/creatives you love and support.

Other social media sites or, even better, their Newsletter. Image of five hearts, each with something Tempest loves in t I know Newsletter is a loaded word these days. It really is the best way to stay connected with creatives. You won't miss any news cuz the Twitter algorithm won't show their posts to you. And you might even get special stuff like discount codes or exclusive stories or something.

One of my favorite headcanons is that Murder, She Wrote is actually a very popular holo-novel in the world of #StarTrek and it was particularly beloved of the Voyager crew (after all, it was the only entertainment they had).

My evidence? Let's go! 🧵

#MurderSheHoloWrote Paris had daddy issues so you know he picked the holo-novel where the father is wrong and he is right. #MurderSheHoloWrote

Hearing the news about Angela Lansbury made me so sad, but I know she lived a good, long life and also knew how much she meant to people.

I love Murder, She Wrote so, so much. In fact, the mystery elements in Ruby Finley are directly influenced by that show. No spoilers, but Ruby and her friends have a Jessica Fletcher moment where they need to get information but don't think the adults will give it to them when asked. So they devise a plan to trick the info out of the adults, something Jessica did all the time.

Guess what! It's 2 weeks until the release of Ruby Finley vs. the Interstellar Invasion!

🎉🎉🎂🎉🎉

Print, eBook, and Audiobook, all available September 27th.

Wanna know what the book is about and what fancy people are saying about it? Take my hand 🫴🏾 and read this🧵 An image of a neighborhood with a tree dominant in the frame Introducing Ruby Finley, science genius.

11yo Ruby loves studying insects and would do just about anything to be an entomologist. So when she finds the weirdest bug she’s ever seen in her front yard, she does what any scientist would do:

Quickly capture it for further study.

Pursuant to the stuff I just RTed about Patrick Tomlinson & Harry Turtledove (of all people) getting their accounts on here banned:

Writers and Other Creatives: You need a newsletter or some other way for people to follow you that YOU control. And yes, you need your own website. Please do not be shy or feel bad about promoting the heck out of this newsletter or other thing you'd like people to subscribe to. It's OK to boost yourself.

People Who Enjoy the Writing and/or Other Creative Output of Writers and Creatives: Please subscribe to said newsletters.

OR -- hear me out -- it might be difficult to find comps because you're not:

1. white
2. writing to the mainstream
3. writing the kind of books you've already seen

I really need people to consider where they sit on the spectrum of privilege before delivering writing advice. I will say that it might be true that some authors struggle to find comps because they don't know about these tools. I'm glad Allison mentioned some tools. But perhaps she could have done so without acting as if anyone who struggles to find comps is a lazy, non-reading A-hole.

I'm still mad about this and I wanna rant about it. You're welcome to come along!

One of the most annoying things about (mostly) American adaptations of Austen's work is the tendency to try and make all Austen protagonists into versions of Lizzie. Austen would be pissed. Even though I love Lizzie as much as the next fan, I love the other protagonists, too, and love them for who they are, not because they're just like the protag in that one really popular book.

I saw the Masterpiece Theater adaptation of Mansfield Park with Billie Piper and...

BIPOC Writers, listen up! I wanna talk a bit about Workshops. It's Clarion/Clarion West/Odyssey season, after all, and I know a ton of writers at or near the beginning of their journey look at these workshops or MFA programs or writing opportunities in general and think: I wish. I wish I had the money to do that.

I wish I had the time to take off work to do that.

I wish that was happening in a timezone closer to mine and not in the middle of the night.

I wish that was more accessible.

Dang, just got an email from @recurpost / @getRecurPost threatening to delete my "extra" social media accounts (I'm only using two) and the recurring scheduled time slots for posts will be deleted entirely if I don't upgrade.

Mind you, I've been on the free plan for over a year. When I signed up for the free plan more was included. And when I signed up there WAS a free plan. Not anymore.

The email was very aggressive, stating that "your account uses resources".

Duh. You were the ones who offered a free plan, friends.

On Delany, the use of the term "colored", intergenerational conversations about language, and why SFWA was still right to remove Mercedes Lackey from programming.

Several people have tweeted the screenshot below at me due to my thoughts on this situation. “Colored ladies," was what my aunts Bessie and Sadie The last line, which doesn't fit into the ALT text, is:

“colored” has no negative connotations among any speakers black or white in my family and never had.

What strikes me about this is that Delany is coming at this issue from a him-centric viewpoint (which is fine).

Since @sfwa made a public statement about it I think it's okay to note that the person who called Delany "colored" was Mercedes Lackey

I seem to remember, back when she was announced as this year's SFWA Grand Master, folks had objections based on her backwards ideas re gender 🧵 There was also an apology put out (long after her defenders spread their toxic goo around Twitter and FB) and I remember thinking that the apology said all the right things, but time would tell if she truly understood why she was wrong.

I'm inclined to go with: No.

I'm on deadline and really shouldn't be on Twitter but I feel like I need to tweet this so I can save the link and then copy/paste into subsequent conversations.

Here we go. This panorama isn't over, it's far from over, and that means everyone (EVERY. ONE.) should be wearing masks in public. Indoors, outdoors if you're around people in a group, indoors, indoors, INDOORS.

Everyone should continue to mask up.

"They've profited plenty"

So... if I understand you, after a certain point, a publisher should not continue to profit off a book they sell even though they still have expenses like printing, shipping, etc? And the author deserves no royalties after... what point? But sure, let's continue to pretend that this is about access for disabled readers. Which disabled readers do you mean?

Blind or partially blind readers who rely on audio books or digital copies that can be read with TTS? I don't see that an audiobook >

Great thread. Whenever I see people talking about "Americans" I want to ask them: Do you mean white Americans? Because it sounds like you're talking about white Americans.

And even then, white folks aren't a monolith.

This conversation reminds me of a writing student of mine 🧵 I have a writing exercise called The Cultural Lens where I give students a list of Qs about the culture in their WiP and have them write the answer and maybe even make a scene about it.

I gave this prompt once:
What happens with people in your culture when a family member dies?

I.... have feelings about this. Both as a writer and as a writing teacher. [thread]

A few years back I taught a few short fiction workshops, and part of what we did was read and analyze published fiction. I had one student who had very telling reactions to the readings. During discussion of two stories in particular:

The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species
Recognizing Gabe: Un Cuento De Hadas

she declared: But this isn't a story!
