The problem with climate change 'debate' in politics and the media is that politicians and journalists are wasting time debating whether facts are true. Either that or ignoring inconvenient facts entirely.

Here is a list of facts that are falsely debated or routinely ignored: 1) It is a fact that new fossil fuel developments are incompatible with mitigating devastating climate impacts.

A libertarian US 'think-tank' funded by fossil fuel companies is behind a good chunk of soft climate denial and contrarian climate crisis positions you see on this website. As El Niño ramps up, it is developing its tactics. One of its paid for climate scientists is @RyanMaue 🧵 Maue works for the Cato Institute, an organisation founded by the notorious billionaire Charles Koch the head of Koch Industries, a petrochemical and pipeline company that for 50 years has funded climate denial cato.org/people/ryan-ma…

In our tweets, we often refer to fossil fuel companies and their CEOs as criminals, extremists, and psychopaths.

Some of you may well be thinking: 'Isn't that a bit strong!'

In fact, these labels are entirely appropriate. Here's why: Fossil fuel companies and their CEOs have known about the reality of global heating for over 40 years. In fact, their own scientists uncovered it as early as the 1970s.

So why are activists GLUED ON to SLB's research centre?

@emilyshuckburgh head of @CambridgeZero said "go and glue yourselves to Schlumberger" to add pressure to @Cambridge_Uni to cut ties

Why are so SLB toxic?

1/ Told to glue on by head of ... ☠️ A toxic industry

SLB's primary business is oil and gas exploration and extraction.

This is the exact thing the IEA has told us not to do.

2/ A scientist in a lab coat

The early months of covid showed actually how easy it is for governments to suspend capitalism in a crisis and this freaked business elites out to an extent most people really don't appreciate It's likely that even the right-wing governments that took these measures were themselves shocked by how easy it was and it spurred a kind of self-flagellating desire to further dismantle any political control of the economy, as we're seeing now

Meteorologists stunned by "the mother of all extreme events in Europe" unfolding now, with summer temperatures to end the year and on the first day of January 🧵 In France it has hit nearly 25C in numerous places yesterday and today, smashing too many records to list

Ecological activists are sometimes accused of being “doomsday” cultists by those who say there is no sign things are deteriorating or that society is heading for collapse. Let’s look at the real-world evidence. Not forecasts or predictions, but things that are actually happening First, the big picture. Global life expectancy dropped 2 years in a row for the first time since the great famine in China in 1959. The reality deniers say this was caused by “just the flu.”

Lots of people will wake up one day with a new chronic illness and won't think to connect it to the "cold" they had a year ago. Because they've been lied to about what Sars2 is and does. People unable to work, study, or play due to ill-health will soar - in fact it already is Last month it was shown that a record high 2.5 million people of working age were inactive, a trend that will only continue to rise with an out of control, all-organ damaging virus allowed to sweep unmitigated through the population

Incredible stat of the day: Just in the City of London, enough money has been invested in fossil fuels to take us to 3.5C. Net zero is designed to square this circle - avoid massive financial losses + limit warming. Net zero is primarily a capitalist, not scientific, invention The stat comes from a new film about oil, the economy and activism. Showings around the UK: theoilmachine.org

Outrageously the world’s largest plastic polluter - Coca Cola – is a "supporting sponsor" of #COP27. But what other big companies that are helping destroy the climate and crash ecosystems are paying to greenwash their image at COP? Read on. First up, Siemens, which earlier this month was also announced as a “supporting sponsor” of COP27. A leading climatologist calls the record October heat around the world a sign that the climate is “spiralling out of control.” From Africa to Asia, Europe to the Middle East to North America, October heat is setting records - with more to come in the next week 🧵 In reference to the heatwave in the US west leading climatologist Maximiliano Herrera says it was a worrying sign of things “spiralling out of control.”

Last year an astonishing article told the story of how Earth’s climate has fluctuated in the deep past. As well as a brilliant historical summary, it was a clarifying warning about climate catastrophe. It deserved more attention. So here is your dive into the past - and future🧵 This is a story in six acts, or leaps back. The primary protagonist is carbon dioxide. The cast of characters is familiar and alien. So without further ado, the first leap

Denial is a seductive psychological force that may once have bestowed survival advantages. "I'll bring home food. I won't get eaten by the bear." But in a global society, denial of existential risk is ruin. The scary thing? The system perpetuates itself by indulging your denial Denial has become the pre-eminent psychological force shaping global society and our actions. If it wasn't obvious with climate and ecological breakdown, it is with covid. Even those of us who know are motivated in so many ways to act like we don't

Life expectancy in Costa Rica is four years longer than in the US (80 vs 76 years) on a fraction of the per capita emissions and income per capita of the US. Can Costa Rica help us imagine a world beyond fossil fuels and ecosystem destruction? 🧵 First, the numbers. On every quality-of-life metric, Costa Rica beats the US. Higher literacy rate, stronger civil liberties, lower cancer rates, lower disease rates, double the forest biomass per hectare, lower child mortality averaged over 30 years and on and on and on.

We are about to see a wave of young right-wing leaders with an explicit pro-fossil fuel, let the world burn agenda framed around notions of freedom. Liz Truss in the UK and Pierre Poilievre, the new Conservative Party leader in Canada, are prototypes for what we can expect. 🧵 This new cohort are children of the pandemic, fuelled by paranoia about climate change and covid policies, gathering under the Great Reset umbrella. Anti-elitism figures prominently. The media will label them populists. But they are not. They are pro billionaire, not pro people.

We have to consider the terrifying prospect that the consumer society we live is more akin to a cult than any other social structure. The idea at the centre of our cult is growth, with the brainwashing so complete that billions service it and die for it, believing it is good Successful cults have incredibly persuasive, charismatic leaders that convince their followers of a story so powerful, that all actions taken in service of this story automatically override every other consideration. Now consider the goal of almost every organisation on Earth...
