Kudos to @THECITYNY & @yoavgonen for diligent & relentless work in educational justice for children.

A thread 🧵on failing yeshivas & failed oversight:
1/ NYC DOE had definitive evidence as early as 2018 that some yeshivas lacked required secular education, yet didn't intervene 2/ DOE investigations noted 4 “underdeveloped” yeshivas with inadequate secular education in core subjects. Despite the findings, the DOE did nothing to ensure those 4 failing yeshivas worked toward compliance. Students of these schools continued to lag behind their peers.

An essential read about the corruption that is rife in the education system in Kiryas Joel, a Hasidic town in New York.

But it is really important to understand why this corruption matters so much, and how it hurts Hasidic children.

A thread 🧵:

nytimes.com/2023/02/20/nyr… The core of the message here is that massive amounts of public funding are going to enrich a small group of leaders in the community:

Specifically, those on the school board and their families.

A #Thread on @JGreenblattADL's statement on the NY Times recent coverage of Hasidic Yeshivas, essentially accusing the Times of causing anti-Semitic attacks.
Greenblatt made the comment in response to a question from a reporter at an unrelated press conference.

1/12 Since then, the @ADL_NYNJ branch has officially tweeted out that statement verbatim on ADL letterhead.

Greenblatt made a rookie mistake responding to a reporter’s question on a whim, rather than issuing a carefully through-out statement, and now it's official ADL policy.

nytimes.com/2022/09/16/opi… "It is an essential obligation of state government and foundational to life and liberty: New York requires children to go to school and to receive instruction in English and math and other basic skills that are necessary for participation in our democratic society."

Must read op-ed from @beawebwriter, a mother of 10 children whose children have attended and still attend Hasidic Yeshivas, on the recent @nytimes Yeshiva investigation.

forward.com/opinion/518032… Beatrice has been a vocal advocate for improving secular education in Yeshivas for years. In 2019, she filed a complaint and then a lawsuit to compel the city to ensure that her son's Yeshiva complies with the law:

[THREAD] From @nytimes: Tens of thousands of students at Haredi and Hasidic Yeshivas are being denied the right to a basic education. After years of investigation, here are the facts. [1/15] “The students in the boys' schools are not simply falling behind. They are suffering from levels of educational deprivation not seen anywhere else in New York, The Times found.” Yaffed has known this for years. yaffed.org/report/ [2/15]

Here's an ugly fact about education in New York State.
🧵
If a fundamentalist community chooses to set up shop and deny kids an education here, they are currently free to do so.

The laws may not permit it, but education authorities will turn a blind eye and allow it It could be a fundamentalist Christian, Muslim, Jewish or any other religion or group.

They can deny an education to boys, girls, or both.

If you don't believe us, go ahead and ask @NYSEDNews Commissioner Betty Rosa what tools she currently has/uses to enforce against that.
