To people seeing #LetWomenSwim - trans women have always been allowed at the ladies pond, and the ladies pond has always been safe. this is moral panic and a distraction; the liberation of trans + cis women will always be bound together. Violence against women has devastated so many of us and defined our lives. Emotionally, it would be neater to have a bogeyman, like trans people. But - in terms of facts not feelings, the evidence shows that trans women are not a threat to the safety or rights of cis women.

i came across the story of these two communists while doing book 2 research, it's INCREDIBLE and v tragic 💔 for me, the point of sharing & archiving it is, less to lionise them & more to understand that we are not the first to fight fascist governments. there is a long history of people who had a real chance of power - to the extent they were spied on, persecuted by murdered by govs

So, here's the story of Olga Benário and Luís Carlos Prestes. Luís was secretary general of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) for 50+ years, and, from what i can tell, the most high profile Brazilian communist of the 20th C. (I'll tell u about Olga in a bit!) 1/? ImageImage Born in 1898, Luíz studies engineering in Rio where he's becomes a leader in the 'tenentes' movement, a rebellion led by young army officials who believe in a popular revolution of the masses against the oligarchical ruling classes. In 1924, Luíz flees to the south of Brazil.

its mad how much (more?) i enjoy panels about politics than about literature, and how dull and absurd (and normal) acting like literature isn't about politics is. Like, when we talk about form or writing we are talking abt the politics of narration, language, intelligibility, >> when we talk about 'getting published' we are talking abt what history is silenced and what histories is made accessible to the masses, what other worlds can be imagined collectively.

"When so many cis women have broken free of men who defined & policed our existence & liberties based on constrictive gender norms, it’s understandable to feel defensive around conversations of gender. "

this article abt transphobia and dv is clear & kind, pls read & share what's really beautiful about what @janeyjstarling and @La_Cowan are doing is hearing and acknowledging the fear and pain of cis women who are scared, while also holding them accountable for the harm they can cause

i used to work for an org that did this kind of thing for companies, & altho sometimes individual ppl had breakthroughs, overall the trainings simply provided companies w cover, reducing racism etc to 1-to-1 interactions. also when a co is paying, how honest can trainings rly be? the org that gave the workshops ended up by firing a bunch of its precarious workers for teaming together & asking for better working conditions.... so go figure 🤷🏼‍♀️

'Latinx' / 'Latino' is not a race. (Think of Gisele Buchan & Pele, the idea that they share an experience of race is obviously 🥴🥴🥴.)
'Latino/ Black/ White' as three separate different races makes NO SENSE in Latin America (doesn't make much sense in the US either but anyway). Using terminology made for the US context - and assuming all latinx = person of colour - obscures what race IS, what race DOES, and what race HAS DONE in Latin America. Take Brazil as an example, >>

i'm really genuinely interested in good faith takes on how to get 50yo + voters to vote left. (have tried to have this convo with my mum but she just says she's in a bubble w her mates) some of the best radical but pragmatic convincing work i've seen was @SexWorkersOpera where one storyline is a younger sex worker in conversation with her mum, and the audience is given permission to id with the mum's views and change as the performance goes on

this is really cool. talks both about how graphic depictions can be harmful ('Werther' effect), and sensitive portrayals of survivals can be positive ('Papageno' effect) deeply resisting the urge to @ certain writers and producers who insist on showing suicide in a really graphic way - and think they're heroes. same goes for critics & reviewers who fawn over this cos it makes them ~feel something~

the latin village story is wild - a labour council (@haringeycouncil led by @CllrEjiofor) and labour mayor (@SadiqKhan) refusing to protect the livelihood of local working people & hub of the latin community... to the extent that @DavidLammy condemned them in parliament @haringeycouncil @CllrEjiofor @SadiqKhan @DavidLammy so much of this is wild but why aren't harringey labour & sadiq khan standing up for their people? why are they taking their votes for granted? what is the point, honestly

In a democracy presidents are not “asked” to step down by the military. This is a coup. Solidarity to the people of Bolivia and Evo Morales. If you’re reading the news coverage and thinking - “oh perhaps he was corrupt, I don’t know if I can RT” - this is what happened to Dilma and now we have Bolsonaro.
