Some brief background info:

Robert Lewis Dabney (1820-1898)—a major figure in 19th century Southern Presbyterianism—was born on March 5, 1820 in Louisa County, Virginia, as the sixth child of Charles and Elizabeth Dabney. Image
His father Charles (a planter, church elder, and county court member) died when Robert was thirteen and this sense of responsibility to his family and their estate slowed Dabney's path to the ministry. Image

For some quick background info: Charles Hodge was born in Philadelphia to a family of Scotch-Irish descent on December 27, 1797 in the aftermath of two Yellow Fever epidemics which claimed the lives of several of his older siblings. Image
While Charles was still a baby, his father, Hugh, a prominent physician in Philadelphia, died from complications from the 1795 Yellow Fever epidemic, and he was raised by his godly mother, Mary. Image
