“Americans have retained their illusions of freedom.”

Among liberal to progressive folks it’s ofc often those with the most wealth and power, who will be last to feel real consequences from U.S. authoritarianism, who cling most tightly to the illusion.

This is what we’re up against when it comes to trying to get major press outlets like @nytimes and @washingtonpost, to say nothing of cable news, to stop normalizing extremism. And a related barrier is that we’re not used to viewing any large group of Christians critically.
White evangelicals are Trump’s key base. 80% of them 45 and older rate Trump favorably. 60% aged 18-44 do as well, and a good chuck of the other 40% in that age demographic will vote for him in 2020 anyway. Mark my words.…

“Liberal believers might need to argue over which party a ‘true’ Christian would support, but politicians do not need to make these arguments.”

I’d say they should not. It concedes what should be the secular public square.…

This is also an excellent point in @AndrewLSeidel’s great new article:

“Secular activism often drags religion into progressive causes.”

My friend @cindy_w_brandt argues a parallel point: evangelicalism changes to the minimal extent it does only thanks to external pressure.
“As evangelicals contend with fast changing demographics, those of us who are born of evangelicalism, but no longer of it, find ourselves in a unique position to impact evangelicalism not by building bridges within it, but building coalitions that shape progress from outside.”

It is telling how the crowd that is so pearl-clutchingly concerned about a supposed lack of free speech on U.S. college campuses ignores the one area where there really is a censorship crisis—evangelical colleges.

Let me point to a few more pieces on the issue I’ve published for those interested in learning more. Start here, with an exposé I did before @RDispatches became part of @Rewire_News:…
Then check out this piece I wrote for @Playboy, which examines evangelical colleges as microcosms of the authoritarianism white evangelicals seek to impose on the entire country:…

Just read Josh Harris’s latest Instagram comment on this. I’m surprised and impressed. His initial steps reconsidering his earlier work were fumbling; he centered himself and he hadn’t given up the purity culture theology, but it seems he was really moving that way after all.
I’m not going to apologize for having the feelings I did after the initial announcement. We do need to make it abundantly clear to the public that purity culture is harmful. There are reasons conservative Christian marriages have major problems and often end in divorce.
Josh Harris does not deserve more empathy than all of the people severely harmed by his book. As someone who had extreme #ChristianPrivilege in evangelicalism, I’d say he deserves less. And it is not my place to forgive him on anyone else’s behalf.

#ChristianPrivilege, like any other form of privilege, can be used for good & evil.

At its best, it's used to share the good news through word AND deed. But where it is corrupted, you see how it has wedded itself with self-serving agendas & power.
There is an increasing criticism of #ChristianPrivilege not because Christians have stewarded our privileges well, but because we have acted with hypocrisy. It is right for people to call us out when we are afraid to do it ourselves. In such cases, we can repent.
With that said, the days of #ChristianPrivilege are quickly diminishing. In this, we must ask ourselves, are we willing to be treated as we have treated others as a whole? If not, then maybe we need to pray and ask God to help us correct our course.

1. I see that #ChristianPrivilege and it still boggles my mind that when folks talk about Christianity, what they often seem to be talking about is white supremacy disguised as Christianity. While yes, there are terrible practices in all Christian sects, let us not forget that
2. Black Christians never had Christian privilege when they wanted to worship without the threat of their churches being burned down or pray for an end to segregation without the threat of being beaten. Arab Christians never had the privilege of being viewed any different from
3. Their Muslim counterparts, especially the ones who live under occupation in Palestine or the ones who can't even pray to Allah in the states without being viewed with suspicion. Let's not forget all of the Latinx folks who have tries to cross into the states for a better life
