/ A new study by @BrighamGI & @MIT documents unlabeled gluten, lactose and other inactive ingredients in medication. "In a recent survey, 18% of manufacturers said their medications contain gluten." #celiac #medication #gluten wapo.st/2Jat3kk

/ The study was led by Dr. Giovanni Traverso @BrighamGI, whose #celiac patient felt sicker after starting a new #drug, due to unlabeled #gluten. The national celiac community has lobbied for over a decade for mandatory labeling of gluten in drugs: celiaccommunity.org/2016/gluten-in…

/ We hope @US_FDA takes notice and revisits its position that #gluten in drugs is rare and in too small amounts to require labeling. @FDAPatientinfo @FDA_Drug_Info This is our position on FDA's stalled and inadequate 2017 gluten in drugs proposal: celiaccommunity.org/2018/fda-comme…

/ Accessing the full text of the new study (subscription or $30), I see the @AP article on it has an error that I quoted - the survey of manufacturers on gluten content in drugs is from 2012, not "recent." The new study does not appear to contain new data on gluten in drugs.

/ The value of the new study is perhaps that the most common oral solid drugs contain on average 75% "inactive" ingredients and the quantity, variety and volume of inactive ingredients necessitates further research, esp. for the health of #celiac, #IBD & #foodallergy patients

/ On @NPR, study co-author Dr. Traverso states the issue of gluten in drugs can be addressed by reading the fine print, studying the NIH Pillbox database, switching to a different manufacturer, or in the future using an app he has a patent to develop (n.pr/2SZJqzS).

/ In fact, information on gluten in drugs is often unavailable, ambiguous, contradictory or so elusive that it requires extensive research beyond the resources of even medical, pharmacological or pharmaceutical professionals, let alone patients.

/ Drug safety for all members of the public, including disease subpopulations, is FDA's mission. The new study on the quantity, variety and volume of "inactive" drug ingredients reinforces our position that gluten in medication should be labeled or banned. #celiac #gluten #drugs
