With #summer fast approaching we want to remind people to be on the look-out for toxin-producing cyanobacterial (harmful algal) blooms when visiting our beautiful lakes, rivers and reservoirs: ow.ly/qUux50u3V0X #Oregon
Because cyanobacteria are naturally occurring, blooms can form in any water body. Many are harmless, but under the right conditions—when weather, sunlight, water temperature, nutrients and water chemistry are ideal—they can produce cyanotoxins that make people & animals sick.
Since only a fraction of #Oregon’s fresh waters are sampled, we recommend staying out of the water if it looks foamy, scummy, thick like paint and pea-green, blue-green or brownish-red in color. When in doubt, just stay out. #SummerSafety
While we don’t recommend getting in affected water during an advisory, other activities like picnicking & hiking pose no risk to your health. It is also safe to enjoy some water activities such as canoeing, fishing & boating as long as speeds do not create excessive water spray.
To learn if an advisory has been issued or lifted for a sampled water body, visit the Harmful Algae Bloom website: bit.ly/2VcZXBw or call the #Oregon Public Health Division toll-free information line at 877-290-6767. #PublicHealth #SummerSafety
