Investigation and verification of all evidences as corroborated by witnesses concluded a few minutes ago at the Commissioner Of @PoliceNG’s office. The 4officers from Iba Division have been identified and found culpable. Currently being sent to homicide division unit in Panti.

The DPO has also been removed for abdication of duty that left a gap in supervision as we have always recommended. They will all be charged and a formal press release will be issued by the PPRO DSP Elkana Bala in a few minutes. #EndImpunity

Gradually, the needed protocols will be put in place to forsatl future occurrences as we implore that the authorities @NGRPresident fastpace the passing of the #PoliceReformBill and the #PoliceTrustFundBill. These are executive Bills. We can’t go on like this. #EndImpunity

We all have to collaborate and work with the authorities to bring about the change we hope to see. We have seen that no progress can be made by standing on the sidelines and pointing fingers. We don’t have a civilization where police carry out jungle justice. #EndImpunity

Thank you all for your voice. If we let this go, anyone can be arrested and gun planted to justify extrajudicial killings. History is replete with examples of this. We must put a premium on human lives. We must be our brothers keeper. Let the court do its job. #EndImpunity

As promised, here is the official statement: PPRO’s office:

“Four Police Officers Arrested for Extra Judicial killings….To face Murder Charges
Attention of @PoliceNG_lagos was drawn to a video on social media showing some...

...Police Officers shooting two unarmed suspects who were arrested and already in their custody against the code of professional conduct and laws guiding how suspects in Police custody should be treated.

The Policemen were identified as Inspector Fabiyi Omomayara, Sergeant Olaniyi Solomon, Sergeant Solomon Sunday and Corporal Aliyu Mukaila attached to Iba Division Patrol team.

The incident happened on 19/8/2019 at about 3.00pm, when Iba Police Station received a distress call from one Anugu Valentine 'm' of no 250 Agege motor road Mushin, that he was attacked by a group of armed men...

...numbering about four on two motorcycles at Ipayi area, Iba and they dispossessed him of one iPhone max valued at #450,000.

Acting on the information, the Divisional Police Officer Iba promptly deployed the Divisional Patrol team to the scene. Two of the armed robbers were arrested while two escaped.

Two locally made pistols with six life cartridges and five expended cartridges were recovered. The gang is said to be notorious for series of robberies in Iba and environs. It was a well celebrated operation by the team as the suspects were gallantly arrested.

The team however, went extreme by killing the suspects who were already in their custody instead of taking them to the Police Station and allowing the normal process of investigation and prosecution to be initiated as stipulated under procedural laws.

That act of extra judicial killings falls short of police professional standards and cannot be condoned by the Command. The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu mni has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Police Officers are currently subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings known as Orderly Room trial & if found culpable, they’ll be dismissed from the Force & will be handed over to the SCID Yaba for prosecution in the conventional Court.

Members of the Public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation and trial.”

End.

Our observation:

@PoliceNG have demonstrated their compliance with the law that states clearly that suspects have rights as well and the standard operational procedures of policing must be maintained at all cost in engaging members of the public of which they are a part.

We appreciate the responsive CP and PPRO of the @PoliceNG_lagos for their cooperation always on sundry cases and most especially for their expedition on this case. Efforts towards monitoring the divisions must be doubled at this point to forestall reoccurrence. @SIAF_NG

UPDATE: Orderly Room trial Concluded.
