Professor Kevin Reinhart @dartmouth speaking about Lived Islam, culture and practice as keynote starting our #CentrefortheStudyofIslam workshop @ExeterIAIS as critique of ‘essentialist’ #Islam

A prominent approach on discursive traditions that is still surprisingly ‘orthodox’ on the centrality of #Quran and #Hadith

Maybe more productive is to consider Islam like a language and its variations in #cosmopolitanism and calques in #sociolinguistics

Contrast of #standardIslam and #dialectIslam

Defining #standardIslam as #CosmopolitanIslam as has no specific space and time but transcends historical and cultural particularity - but in fact this is rather thin as absence of real lifecycle rituals

This is a notion of #CosmopolitanIslam which I guess one would associate with #Salafism

#dialectIslam allows for indigenisation and both global and local

What tends to bind Muslims especially are rituals

Standard rituals like #Hajj are actually koines and still vary

Plenty of push back on this especially by referring to #tradition as it is considered in #MacIntyre and extended by #Mahmood and #Hirschkind
