I applaud staff at USA publishers #Hachette who walked out in solidarity with sexual abuse survivors, forcing the publisher to cancel plan to publish Woody Allen‘s memoir.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar… #WoodyAllen

Maybe I’m straying into unpopular opinion territory but for me the free speech issue is not clear cut.

I wouldn’t play let alone pay for a Michael Jackson record. (Helps that I don’t like his music). I wouldn’t watch a Polanski film. For me there are red lines.

As the quote from a member of staff at Hatchett said, this book deal would have included distribution, marketing and publicity- and I assume a considerable fee - for Woody Allen.
It would have been a cynical move from a publisher who also worked with Ronan Farrow.

None of the women being de-platformed have managed to evade being held to account for sexual violence against children and women unlike say #WoodyAllen #Polanski #MichaelJackson #JulianAssange #Assange

If you disagree with me, that’s fine by me. For as long as I can remember I’ve believed the issue of free speech is less clear cut than usually presented.
