Access to information is essential in fighting an unprecedented pandemic and the Government of India must not muzzle freedom of press - affecting the human rights guarantees & impeding world’s right to know.
"The Govt must immediately drop all charges against journalists Masrat Zehra, Peerzada Ashiq and others who remain incarcerated for exercising their right to expression and refrain from abusing its power in this time of crisis,” said @Avinash_1_Kumar.
Under international human rights law, any restrictions to #FreedomOfExpression on the ground of public order must be demonstrably necessary or proportionate.
Harassment and intimidation of the journalists through draconian laws such as #UAPA threatens the efforts to address the #COVID19 pandemic and creates an atmosphere of fear and reprisal.
