On Tuesday an alert was raised in the UK about two serious syndromes being seen in children associated with #COVID19. Dr @normanswan takes a look. #abc730 #coronavirus #KawasakiDisease #ToxicShockSyndrome

#KawasakiDisease is rare but nasty, with the child having a severe rash, peeling skin on the hands, inflammation of the arteries, a strawberry red tongue and sometimes heart damage.” @normanswan #abc730 #coronavirus

“Almost as rare is #ToxicShockSyndrome, usually linked to a bacterial infection - again with a rash, as well as blood pressure that can crash fatally.” @normanswan #abc730 #coronavirus

“On the face of it, neither illness should have anything to do with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes #COVID-19, but in recent weeks children’s doctors in the UK have suspected a connection.” @normanswan #abc730 #coronavirus

“They either have persistent inflammation, so fever for quite a few days associated with abdominal pain, some them having quite profuse diarrhoea, and then quite often having rashes or red eyes.” Dr Liz Whittaker, infectious diseases specialist. @lizWWyld #abc730 #coronavirus

“We spoke to colleagues and other centres in London and the UK, who had also seen a couple of cases. And because of that, and because we're in the middle of an outbreak, it was reasonable to think that they might be related to #COVID19.” Dr Liz Whittaker. @lizWWyld #abc730

“This disease is increasingly showing its true face, which is that it attacks all ages and the whole body, and that in turn makes the search for a treatment both more urgent and more challenging.” @normanswan #abc730 #coronavirus

“A couple of the children who have had the shocks that I described had myocarditis, that's where your heart is also a little bit inflamed. That was quite similar to the adults with #COVID19.” Dr Liz Whittaker. @lizWWyld #abc730 #coronavirus

“I don't think this is unique to the UK, I think that we've possibly just raised it sooner because of our reporting systems.” Dr Liz Whittaker. @lizWWyld #abc730 #coronavirus
