Last week we surveyed renters about being able to pay rent for May. Here are some responses:
“I emailed my landlord saying my rent is a hundred percent of my income and he said his mortgage company won't give him a break so I don't get a break."

"I did try to negotiate with my landlord but they are big corporations and won't do any rent reduction of deferral. They just told me to apply for the BC Rent Supplement."
"Yes I can pay May 1st rent but I won't have enough money for basic necessities. My Landlord did not offer a rent reduction. I tried to contact my landlord but nothing had come from it. They told us to move and find a better place to live.”
"Can pay for now but might lose employment at some point. My experience with my landlord was terrible, he was actually mean about it and said it wasn't his problem. He's the type who would try to evict, has threatened in the past."
"Already do not have a great relationship with my landlord. Not currently comfortable trying to negotiate. He has literally not been in the building since March 15. I think he's afraid of catching COVID. No communication, good or bad."
